Have you ever thought of what it might be like to be part of a medical trauma unit working in an emergency room? What about being an automation engineer at a cereal factory? What about getting to see firsthand what it's like to be a fireman who is going to respond to a blazing fire somewhere in your city? We thought it would be useful to you to provide a list of potential field trips that you could take your Scouts on. One of the Scout themes for a month is “When I Grow Up.†You could use this information ......
Backpacks ready to be worn to go camping. Stock image purchased by Mike Walton (This was originally included in "Patches and Pins, " but several editors recommended that I remove it from the book because it was more truth than fiction, and I reluctantly was "selling" the book as a fiction novel based upon my life. "Make up your mind, " they would write. I kept this story, however, and some of you who followed me in my earlier days on the Scouts-L youth programs discussion list have run across this in a slightly different (and shorter) format. I posted it when the ......

During the recent National Annual Meeting of the Boy Scouts of America, held in Atlanta, I attended several sessions geared to share information and to bring it back to my local Council to share with them. Since my "local Council" (Transatlantic) serves youth in some 60 (I haven't counted the total number of countries, so I'm guessing 60) countries on three continents (Europe, Africa, Asia) within 13 time zones, I decided to share my Scouting experiences with all of you.  The most important thing, as expressed in several of the sessions, was to "tell YOUR Scouting Story, " especially to those ......
(From "Patches and Pins..." by Mike Walton (c) 1994. )When I was growing up in Rose Terrace, just about everyone did car washes to raise money for some organization or another. A car wash was cheap to run....get some detergent, some sponges and old shirts, towels and some dishwashing liquid. And lots of water. Go out someplace hopefully on a sunny, clear day, set up the signage, and you're in business! Not a lot of people spend time like they used to washing their cars. It used to be a Saturday morning or afternoon ritual....but then, that's why we made a ......

Scouting doesn’t stop, even after you move on from a unit. In 1988, a group of Scouters whose sons were no longer part of Troop 172 of Westfield, N.J., wanted to stay involved in the program that had shaped their families’ lives. So, they began working in a two-car garage at Winnebago Scout Reservation in New Jersey. They used their talents and some old donated equipment to do maintenance at the camp, replace signs at other Patriots’ Path Council camps, and construct new buildings and a waterfront. This group of 27 retired Scouters call themselves “The Flintlocks.†Their spouses jokingly ......
Story written and submitted by Life Scout Elijah My name is Elijah and I am a 14-year-old Life Scout with Troop 340 in Marietta, Georga. I joined Scouting when I was in first grade as a tiger at my elementary school. My mom signed me up because she wanted me to get out of my shell and become more confident. Before Scouts, I was very shy and kept to myself. After joining though, I became more confident and gained Scout brothers that helped me to open up more to others. My Cubmaster, Ms. Janice ......
Q: What’s the best type of multitool that’s useful and affordable?— Levi, Orcutt, California A: The best type is one that has the tools you need. Do you really need to spend $170 on a heavy-duty device equipped with a miniature saw, hammer and electrical crimper for your monthly campouts? Probably not. Shop in a manufacturer’s compact line. These pocket-sized tools will have fewer features, but they’ll also cost less — usually between $20 and $50. Quality brands include Leatherman, Victorinox Swiss Army and Gerber. For example, Gerber’s Armbar line ($39, gerbergear.com) comes in two styles; both include a locking ......
When you join a Scouts BSA troop, one of the first things you’ll work on is earning the rank of Scout. Good news! You’ll complete many of these same requirements when you’re a Webelos Scout. Then after you join a Scouts BSA troop, all you have to do is show an adult Scouts BSA leader what you’ve learned. The key is to pay attention now, so you don’t have to relearn everything later. First — if you haven’t already — work on memorizing the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout motto, Scout slogan and Outdoor Code. Explain what Scout spirit is. ......

“You were never a Boy Scout, †one character tells another as they prepare to face a villainous vampire. “I, however, always come prepared.†This line, found in Stephen King’s 1975 dark novel Salem’s Lot, is one of dozens of Scouting references in the master storyteller’s works. Of King’s 59 full-length novels to date, at least 32 reference Scouting in some way. Scouts march in the Derry town parade in It, a character raises her right hand in the Scout salute in Duma Key, and the hero creates a makeshift compass in The Dark Tower III, an act that causes his traveling companion to ......
