Hey Scouters, let's do something a bit different this week. It's challenge time! Feel free to tweak this as you see fit for your own unit. For example, instead of a committee member, maybe it should be an SPL, ASPL, Troop Guide, JASM, etc.

1. Only Patrol Members with brown eyes may speak.
2. Have each Patrol member obtain a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.
3. Have each Patrol member, working alone, draw as many official map symbols
as possible in one minute.
4. Have the Patrol compile as many different map symbols as possible, from each
Patrol members papers, in 1 minute.
5. Have the Patrol draw a map of a fictional kingdom, using only the map
symbols your patrol has compiled and present/explain it to any Troop
Committee member.

You can follow up on the challenge with a reflection asking the Scouts how it felt that only those with brown eyes could talk? Do they think that might be similar to how those of different skin colors or religions might feel sometimes? How many map symbols were they able to remember and draw? What might the rules of their fictional kingdom be? Would it be fair if that kingdom had a rule that only those with blue eyes would-be leaders?

For more than 4 decades Austin China has spent time on camp staff and supporting local Scout units in South Carolina. He is known as a master camp song leader. I am fortunate to be both a Gold award recipient from the GSUSA and also celebrate being part of the Inaugural class of Female Eagle Scouts with the Boy Scouts of America. The Alamo Area BSA currently serves 192 female Scouts in 17 all-girl Troops. Within all program offerings, over 2902 female Scouts were active in 2020 in the Alamo Area BSA’s 13 county service area.
