Facebook image by Nick Owen My mother and several of my friends (mostly males) all asked me the same question as I was growing up. As a young Scoutmaster, I was asked that same question by parents who were interested in Boy Scouting but wondered out loud, "what will he get out of this?" Black and Latino's families ask that same question when I go to communities of color and introduce and explain Scouting to them. It is a universal question, sometimes even asked of ourselves: "What's the value of all that Scout crap? It sounds and looks to me like algebra or Latin ......
Image by 41330 from Pixabay During the pandemic lockdown, I had a lot of time sitting around my home office thinking. It occurred to me how much paper we waste by only using one side of it. With some more thought, I came up with a number of ways you could use the backside of that piece of paper and not just for notes or to color on. First, it's worth noting that some printers, such as mine, have a setting to tell it to print ‘double-sided’ which means on both sides of the paper. A cool side-effect of double-sided printing is ......
Image by FunkyFocus from PixabayWe thought that since many people still had to stay inside, or at least not be able to go on that summer vacation that the family would typically take…that we would investigate some virtual tours and places to see and visit from inside your home. Many museums and other vacation spots all over the world are enabling folks to try to find new things to see and do by offering free virtual performances, exhibitions, videos, and exclusive performances for people to take in from their homes. You can (with the help of your computer) go for ......
Personal Scouting photo collection image Last weekend I attended my Council's Executive Board meeting in Brussels, Belgium. My commitment to the Transatlantic Council -- the primary local Council I am registered through -- calls for me to attend in person at least one Board meeting each year and to participate via teleconference to three of the other four meetings during the year. In exchange, I get to help guide the local Council I grew up in, give leadership at the unit level with, and now support as the Council expands to three times its former size. On Sunday evening, I sat down with ......
This BSA camp was one that was recommended to us by our readers. Some of the pictures shown on this web page were also sent in from one of our viewers. Camp Laramie Peak is the 7th oldest Boy Scout Camp in America. Camp Laramie Peak is located on a working ranch. The scenery is amazing and you might get to drive through a herd of buffalo. In 2020, CLP is 100 years old. It has been through many disasters and has come out being a wonderful camp. Despite the age, the camp is up to date. From family-style dining ......

Weekends in the Munsch household flew by like a 90 mph fastball. On Saturdays, Jason Munsch, who at age 11 pitched a no-hitter in a Little League All-Star Game, played baseball. After the final out, Dona and Keith Munsch drove their son to meet his fellow Scouts wherever Troop 566 was camping that weekend. And when Jason returned home on Sunday, he finished homework and got ready for another week of school. “A lot of it was getting over how scary it sounds, ” Jason tells Bryan on Scouting. “As long as you’re willing to dedicate yourself to a decently busy schedule, ......
Every year the Change Maker Award recognizes girls who are making a difference in Guiding and creating a better world through community service, friendship, and advocacy. The award highlights girls across all branches, who are taking actions, small or large, local or international, community-based or far-reaching. The Change Maker Award recognizes and encourages girls who are making an impact and celebrates girls’ confidence, resiliency, and independence. It’s a chance to shine a spotlight on outstanding girls for the whole Guiding community to see. The award builds self-esteem and encourages friendship because girls can choose to nominate themself or another girl in Guiding. Girls’ actions make a difference in the lives of other girls and impact ......
Since its debut a year ago, our Unsung Heroes series has spotlighted 16 underreported acts of heroism. We’ve told you about a Venturer who rescued a family after a car crash, a Cub Scout who stopped a friend from choking and a Scout who saved an injured hiker during a family vacation. But today’s Unsung Hero is a little different. Jasper Wang, a 13-year-old Star Scout from Troop 755 of Northville, Mich. (Michigan Crossroads Council), isn’t being recognized for a one-time act of courage but for a lifetime of them. Jasper’s older brother, Malcolm, has epilepsy that causes intense, scary ......
During a pandemic, Scouts have had to get creative to continue their adventures and service. Sometimes, the changes transformed their plans into something much greater than they conceived. John-Aaron Bozanic, an Eagle Scout and current Venturer with Crew 774 in Laguna Woods, Calif., was working on a conservation project when the COVID-19 virus began spreading across the country. His changes turned his project into a worldwide effort. “It started out as an underwater cleanup off California, but with the COVID outbreak, I modified it to make it feasible for the times, ” John-Aaron says. “I have had Scouts from all ......
