With all the craziness going on in the world, is there something small, anything we can do as Scouters to help Scouting stay strong and grow? What is it that Scouts are looking for from Scouts? Friends, social time, outdoor adventure, to have fun, or maybe, to sit around a campfire having smores and telling crazy ghost stories?
Â
There are so many things they look for and desire, but are we giving it to them? What can we do to make Scouting more fun and exciting? How can we encourage our young leaders to put on a stronger and more amazing program? Do you let them fall down and get back up bit battered but proud to try again?
Â
All Scouting is local, and thus the answer to this question will be different not only by where you are located but also by the leaders and youth in your units. We should take the time to reflect on how Scouting is different for everyone everywhere. At the same time, we have a common framework for us to work within that allows us to bring a lot of joy, adventure, and so many other things to them, even if it only impacts one scout or many.

It sounds like something you’d read on the inside flap of an adventure novel. A family of five takes a 25-day sailing journey across the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, they conquer challenges, acquire invaluable life skills and strengthen the bonds of family. When they arrive in the South Pacific, the three daughters — forever changed by the journey — use what they’ve learned to give back to local communities in need. That was the Vannini family’s plan, at least. In March 2020, they were all set to leave on their catamaran to begin a real-life adventure to Tonga and ......
Did you know there are five Legacy Athletic badges?  With these badges, girls learn how to be a valuable member of a team by becoming familiar with the rules of the game and how to play so that everyone feels included. The takeaway is that girls learn what it takes to be a part of a team and support others on and off the field. These badges connect girls to health, leadership, learning, and teamwork through sports. While having fun, staying active, and leading a healthy lifestyle, girls earn five age-appropriate athlete badges that teach them about fair play, practicing with ......
They come from all over the country — from Southern California to central Maine. Their tenure in the Venturing program ranges from years to decades. And while some worked tirelessly behind the scenes, others made their mark in the spotlight. For all their differences — all the unique ways that these Venturers and Venturing Advisors supported the program — they’re about to share something in common. And what a shiny something it is. Nine outstanding Venturers and Venturing Advisors have been named recipients of the 2021 National Venturing Leadership Award. These Greenshirts, to use the unofficial nickname inspired by Venturing’s unique ......

This is a gadget which was shown to us at a recent Roundtable. It uses lashings to make a handwashing station from straight sticks and an empty gallon milk jug.  So your Scouts can use this for the First Class Requirement – Use lashing to make a useful camp gadget. We haven’t had a chance to try this one yet, but the Scouter who presented said it works great. And if you position it in the sun, you get warmer water. He recommended having a second milk jug ready to go underneath for when the first on ......
What are some of your favorite outdoor activities? Swimming, fishing or sliding, perhaps? Those are some favorite pastimes for otters, too. Though otters have to spend time looking for food and avoiding predators, they always seem to have lots of time for playing. PLAYFUL AND OUTGOING Otters are aquatic or semi-aquatic carnivorous mammals whose closest relatives are weasels and minks. They have long, sleek bodies and long, muscular tails. Their short legs and webbed feet make them powerful, efficient swimmers. If you could touch an otter, you’d notice the incredibly dense waterproof fur. In fact, it’s the densest fur ......
Knowledge of fire safety and the fire triangle is an essential outdoor skill. Scouts should understand the science of fire when camping.  Newer scouts often struggle to get a fire going. Understanding the way fire works and what is required to start and sustain a fire not only helps them build fires. It also helps scouts know how to contain fires and put them out. The Science of Fire – The Fire Triangle First, you must understand that a fire requires three elements, which are known as the fire triangle: ......
After battling a blaze, firefighters are often wet and dirty. And for some, they are wet and dirty going to put out a fire. Firefighters with Station 1 in Gainesville, Fla., had this problem. Not only was their turnout gear (pants, jackets, boots, etc.) soaking wet and covered in soot after fighting a fire, they had no efficient way of cleaning and drying it before heading out again. They often resorted to hanging their gear off of railings or safety bollards around the station. It would take days for the heavy equipment to fully dry, and firefighters didn’t have enough ......
This is a great skit if you have a Scouter or Scout who doesn’t mind getting messy. My husband has done this skit several times with Cub Scouts and it is always funny. The idea behind the skit is that the Scouter with the banana has misunderstood the announcer. Every time the announcer says to do something with the bandana, the Scouter does it with a banana instead. You can find additional skits on my Scout Skits page. Banana Bandana Skit Players One Scouter, ......
Q: Every time it rains, the inside of my tent gets wet. And, yes, I have a rain fly and a ground cover. The water still seeps through and gets my pillow and my sleeping bag wet. Any tips?— William, Edwards, California A: First, check for any leaks. If you find one along a seam, apply a sealant like Gear Aid’s Seam Grip WP Waterproof Sealant and Adhesive ($8, gearaid.com). For the rest of the tent, use a waterproofing spray to fortify the fabric’s integrity — Nikwax Tent Gear SolarProof spray ($18.25, nikwax.com) works well. No leaks? The problem ......
Story by Evan Heller, Buckeye Council It would have been like watching a scene from a movie—if I’d had time to think about it. With 10 seconds left in a hard-fought basketball game, my team of underdogs was tied with the tournament’s top seed. Nobody expected us to hang with them this close, yet now we were within a single basket of a huge upset. We were oblivious to the pressure, oblivious to the crowd, oblivious to the sweat, just playing our game. I wheeled into position, and a teammate passed me the ball as he’d done hundreds of times ......
What strings, cords and shoelaces as loops? Sure why not! Using these can be simply functional or decorative depending on what suits you. In the Bowie Knife slide, the cord loops I used are simply functional so I wasn't taking away from the knife and sheath. It was also simple to attach. Cord loop In the case of the Shovel and Pick side, I wanted a loop that would add something extra. In this case I used mason's line to fashion a Solomon's ladder woven loop. String loop When making the Fusion Knot slides ......
It’s 3 a.m. when Austin Reeves wakes up to a rustling noise. Whatever is making the noise sounds big. Really big. And it’s getting closer. “It sounded like it was right outside my tent, †the 12-year-old Second Class Scout says. “I was pretty sure it was a bear. I woke up my tent buddy. We were freaking out, because we didn’t know what to do.†Austin thinks he hears the bear’s flaring nostrils sniffing around the boys’ tent. Suddenly, he remembers a tip he learned earlier in the week for warding off bears. He reaches into his backpack and ......
If someone asked you to name an Eagle Scout who walked on the moon, your go-to response might be Neil Armstrong. But did you know the youngest person to step foot on the moon, Apollo 16 astronaut Charles Duke, is also an Eagle? Even cooler? Tune in via the Scout Life Facebook page or the National Capital Area Council’s STEM page. He walked on the moon. Now he’s answering YOUR questions! Scouts and youth from all ......

If you wear glasses, you’ve probably gotten annoyed by foggy lenses from wearing a face covering during the pandemic. KeySmart’s FogBlock anti-fog spray ($15, getkeysmart.com) can help you see clearly. The concoction of water, isopropyl alcohol and sodium bicarbonate provides 24-hour relief from condensation. Clean your lenses, spray it on and let it fully dry. The 1-oz. bottle should last about 120 sprays. If you’re nervous about applying anything to your spectacles, you can try this trick: Since the mist forms primarily from your hot breath seeping up from the mask, use micropore surgical tape or a couple adhesive bandages ......

Source: https://www.spreaker.com/user/santeeswapper/94-mixdown Perhaps the first podcast I ever listened to back in 2006 was an ambitious project that was launched by some guys out of Coosa Lodge 50 in Alabama.
