Scouters, it's great you joined us for another issue of our weekly newsletter. Did you know I am an Eagle Scout, class of 1991? I earned my Eagle with Troop 141 at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and my service project involved setting up an interpretive trail at Vasquez Rocks, Los Angeles County Park.
With that said, what amazing projects have your Scouts done for their Eagle Project? Would they like a congratulatory letter from us? All you have to do is contact us with the scout's name, details about their project & challenges he overcame, plus any other information you think would be useful. https://insanescouter.org/contact_us.php
Scouter's let's give a huge welcome to our latest sponsor ClassB. Please check them out if you need custom pages, shirts, neckerchiefs, etc for your group. When you get a chance drop by their website https://www.classb.com/ and say hi for us.
With that said, may we kindly ask that you help support InsaneScouter, to preserve our chain of fantastic resources? By request of many, we now offer patreon.com/insanescouterl
Shutterstock image purchased by Mike Walton became a Cub Scout, and therefore a member of the Boy Scouts of America, via a flyer stuffed in our postal mailbox in Germany in 1967. The flyer simply informed the holder that Cub Scouts -- Pack 63, sponsored by the American Legion Post 63 -- was available in Ludwigsburg, Germany -- and that I should join! Most importantly for ME, the Pack's meeting place was right across the street -- in the attic of Building 1112 and that if I needed more information, to call Ludwigsburg Civilian (LC) 28-4440 (I memorized the number...)I ......
Courtesy of the 007 Museum (thanks!) I am a fan...no, I am "ga-ga" over Captain James Bond, formerly Commander James Bond, otherwise known as "double knot seven" (007), one of a few who have a legal "license to kill." A few people have played this role, among them my "best" Bond, the actor Pierce Brosnan ("Remington Steele" if you recall how he got to be "James Bond"...), shown in the above image on the left. Even fewer played the expert creator and armorer of Bond and the other agents working in MI-6, the arm of the British Secret Service, which dispatches people to ......
Image of APO brother at a workshop. Paul asked me if I knew anything about APO:"Hey, Mike!! When I was in Scouts (and you too probably), there was a page and a half in our Scout Handbooks talking about the Scout Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Today, I don't hear about them, don't see them on our campus (University of Minn.) and in talking with many of the Scouts, they don't seem to know about them. What happened? Did the fraternity go away or was it a victim of the BSA's "PC-ness" back in the 90s? I don't see a chapter at the ......
Image provided by Settummanque (Mike Walton) Our pioneers had one (well, kinda...didn't really fit into a pocket, but the concept was the same). Rambo had one, and so did similar characters portrayed by Steven Segall, Arnold (do I have to type his last name *smiling*?), and several others. Harrison Ford had a version of one in a couple of his movies. My personal hero, Angus MacGyver, not only had one but during the first four seasons of the television show carrying his name, found a usage for his (or someone else's) pocket "multi-tool" each week. Gerber and the Swiss Army folks (Victorinox) all went into high gear. I ......
Joe Csatari (BSA Image used under Fair Usage Policy) A Frequently Asked Question of Scouters like myself is one which Mike Clark wrote and asked recently:"Has anyone defined "a service project"?"Service project: an individual or group event designed to demonstrate elements of community pride, volunteerism, and/or dedication to principles of the individual or group involved. Activities that "give back" or "pay forward" similar type activities performed for the individual or group. (my personal definition of what a "service project" is)"Why Community Organizations such as the Boy Girl Scouts, our religious groups, civic and fraternal groups do Service Projects?"Schools also perform service projects. They do so ......
(This was originally written as part of my unpublished book "Eagle Feathers" in 2004.) A question posed to me -- surprising because of who asked the question -- made me think a lot about what the public thinks that Scouting is about and what little we've told them recently about what we do.I was standing on a platform at the Crystal City, Virginia stop along the METRO, Washington D.C.'s series of underground trains which run between most of the communities in and around the capital city of our nation. The trains run underground and above-ground as well as they snake their way around ......
Stock photo from Photobucket I have an officemate, several years older than me. Jere Matty is a retired Air Force pilot, engineer, and currently, the "one who teaches" our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or STEM) lab and center at Arnold Air Force Base. Since both are interested in the same things -- getting young people to explore opportunities here at Arnold -- we frequently exchange notes, resources and information. After all, that's what officemates do. Besides, both of us love Lego(TM), and we have several Lego(TM) pieces around our corners of the office suite. He shared with me a recent visit to ......
BSA Image used under fair usage guidelines I guess it is the time of year in which good-intentioned parents desire to question each and everything and process that goes on within Scouting. Personally, I have no problem with this -- it shows their interest in the program, and I hope the outcomes they desire for their son. I have been on the road for the better part of three weeks and have not had a chance to fully review, let alone answer, much of the email sent to me. I pride myself in responding within three days to inquiries left on my ......
Cortney Grosz provided the images for me...thanks! I collect, trade, and sell a lot of various Scouting items. The things I tend to keep are tied to my membership and service in several locations as a volunteer. I also keep things which tie my military service -- as a combat Signaleer, personnel manager, and public affairs manager/director/stick arranger -- to my Scouting service as a mentor, counselor, committee member, and supporter. For instance, I have lots of patches and parts -- segments -- of patches associated with my service as a member of the BSA's Transatlantic Council. In my day, it was ......
Image by Thomas B. from Pixabay I remember when I was in Cub Scouts and Webelos, and we always had our Pack meetings in the gym of my elementary school. That usually worked out well, especially when there would be some physical activity that was a part of the Pack meeting, like Dodgeball (yup, that’s how old I am). According to Wikipedia, a gymnasium, also known as a gym, is a covered location for athletics. The word is derived from the ancient Greek gymnasium. ... The word gym is also slang for a fitness center, which is often an area for indoor recreation. Scouting ......
A long explanation to demonstrate why I -- and many other people involved in Scouting -- wear what seems like uniform shirts better fitting for third world dictators and military chiefs than those of volunteers or professionals interested in helping your family have a great Scouting experience. (Illustration of what I'm talking about) The last time I was in Iraq, I suffered a serious eye injury. The year I was there, there were two really big dust storms which came up, one in which several other people and I were caught off-guard and were not provided immediate shelter and eye protection. As a result, ......

Guest Blog from Interim CEO Judith Batty The terrible events of January 6 are a stark reminder of the fragility of democracy and the critical need for every generation of Americans to be civically educated and engaged from a young age. According to a 2019 survey by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, just 39% of adults in our country are able to name all three branches of government. This is a shocking statistic, and it reflects the unfortunate fact that, across the U.S., civics is not taught in many classrooms. Girl Scouts is committed to being part of the solution. ......
“Good stories surprise us. They make us think and feel. They stick in our minds and help us remember ideas and concepts in a way that a PowerPoint crammed with bar graphs never can.” – Joe Lazauskas and Shane Snow, The Storytelling Edge Everyone loves a good story. Stories teach, entertain, heal, touch, remind and, probably most importantly, help us apply intangible concepts and character values that we learn elsewhere. Can you imagine trying to learn to become “trustworthy” without a good story? Or “loyal”? Or learning to “Do A Good Turn Daily”? The way we learn – really learn ......
Monica sent in this question: Hi, We have our blue and gold coming up in a few weeks. Most boys are earning their Arrow of light but we have one boy who is only crossing over and one boy who is ending his scout career this year and not joining a boy scout troop. I will be ordering AOL plaques. I have found a similar beautiful plaque with a fleur de lis which I plan to give to the boy crossing over. What do we present to the boy who is quitting scouts? Any ideas? My understanding ......

I see younger and younger children all the time with cell phones in their hands. And in many schools, computers are a tool just like a pencil or a notebook. So now more than ever we need to ensure that our kids use technology safely and for its intended purpose. The BSA Cyber Chip program encourages Scouts to learn how to use their electronic devices safely. Some of the issues the program addresses are protecting personal information, cyber bullying, appropriate use of social media, cell phones, texting, and netiquette. There are different requirements ......

Cooperation is an important concept for children to understand. BSA has a Cub Scout pack meeting plan called Under the Big Top related to this value. The Under the Big Top pack meeting plan features ideas for the core value of cooperation – games, group activities, songs, and more. Here is how the BSA plan suggests tying together this theme with the value of cooperation: At the circus all of the workers must work together to put on a safe and exciting show. They must cooperate. Just as the circus workers ......
As always, the safety of our Scouts, volunteers, employees and communities is our top priority. Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to be informed by expertise from agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We expect that everyone in Scouting will follow the guidelines listed below, which are based on the CDC’s guidance. In addition, we have instructed local councils to consult with their local and state health departments, as well as local chartered partners, in order to implement appropriate protocols to help keep members, volunteers, and employees safe. ......
They say you can’t be what you can’t see. And Girl Scouts around the country are watching with eyes wide open as the newest slate of elected officials transcends barriers for women in office. Girls have plenty of examples to look up to: at least 122* women representatives and delegates will serve in the 117th Congress—the most ever! And 55% of them are Girl Scout alums. “As a Girl Scout, when I see other women that have been in Girl Scouts, I feel like I have representation. I also feel confident because I know that they will live by ......
There’s a lot about 2020 most of us would like to forget, but protecting ourselves and our Scouts from COVID-19 is something we all must remember to do. In surveys the BSA sent out to more than 14, 500 unit leaders, two-thirds of those polled indicated they were feeling positive about restarting Scouting. Some respondents were not meeting, and one of the big reasons was virtual fatigue. We get it. We’re ready to get back to seeing each other in-person again — serving the community, going on fun outings and having outdoor adventures. But, these activities must be done safely. ......

When he taught merit badge classes at Woodland Trails Scout Reservation in Ohio, Andrew Wheeler wanted Scouts to know the importance of conservation and environmental issues we face. It’s still his mission as the 15th administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To commemorate the agency’s 50th anniversary last year, the Boy Scouts of America and EPA signed a memorandum of understanding to create a special award, encouraging those in the Scouts BSA program to strive to protect the environment. The award, which features a patch, requires Scouts to earn environmental and community health-focused merit badges and participate in a ......

Popsicles are a great summer treat, but they are really good for any season. And the ones from the store are very convenient, but sometimes it’s fun to make your own. Your kids can get pretty creative with the ingredients. If you have your own popsicle molds, great! Otherwise, it is still pretty easy to make your own frozen treats. Print Homemade Popsicles There are so many things you can use to make popsiicles. Try juice, pudding, or yogurt. You can also add ......
[ISSUE 662 – 20TH YEAR OF HELPING SCOUTS, SCOUTERS, PARENTS] Paul Wolf, fellow long-time USSSP.ORG volunteer and our resident expert on BSA advancement (including consultant to BSA National Headquarters folks), told me more about the upcoming “DEI” merit badge. Scouting volunteer Kirk Wood pointed out this BSA post to me also. I’ve included it immediately below, followed by additional commentary by Paul. January 7, 2021: “Proposed Eagle Scout Required Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Merit Badge Delayed. “The introduction of the proposed Diversity, Equity and Inclusion merit badge is being delayed to allow for the careful consideration and evaluation of ......
J Williams asked this question Just yesterday on national news, 14-year-old Amanda Bales was featured as the first girl to attain Eagle Scout status. Among other things, she mentioned that she “spent a night in the woods alone.” Would this have been achieved under the Wilderness Survival merit badge requirement or something else? How much latitude or discretion does a merit badge counselor have to custom tailor an activity to fit a requirement? Wondering. Thank you. Thanks for the question. Without more information, it is difficult to say. It could ......

Benjamin Meybaum was hiking with his family along the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania when he spotted the sign. The modest wooden marker, a little faded by its years outside, read: “This site was made as an Eagle Scout project.” It listed the Eagle Scout’s name (Josh Custer) and the project beneficiary (the York Hiking Club in Pennsylvania). For this Life Scout from Troop 273 of Stow, Ohio (Great Trail Council), it was a lightbulb moment. He realized that Eagle Scout service projects don’t just have to benefit schools or places of worship — though those are worthwhile beneficiaries, too. Inspired ......

Friends of Scouting (FOS) is an opportunity for families, friends, alumni, businesses, and community organizations to support Scouting. The registration fee goes directly to the national office of the Boy Scouts of America. If a Scout unit collects dues, that money stays with the unit to help pay for supplies, advancements, and other activities. None of that money helps the Sam Houston Area Council.
