It is our hope to launch both of these, for FREE, sometime in January.

William D. Boyce didn’t start the BSA all by himself. Sure, he was the man who signed the papers to make the Boy Scouts of America official — at exactly 11:03 a.m. on Feb. 8, 1910. But just like the volunteers who start new BSA units every year, Boyce had plenty of help. For Boyce, that help came in the form of names you might recognize, such as Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest Thompson Seton, and James E. West. Think about the men and women who started your pack, troop, ship or crew. I’m guessing you’re not thinking of just one person ......
After crossing over from Pack 82 to Troop 99 in Benton, Ark., Nicholas Burrell was looking forward to many campouts, fishing trips, and summer camp adventures. But before he could complete his first year in the older youth program, the 11-year-old went to see a doctor about the intense headaches he began having — and another doctor, and another and another. Multiple scans and tests revealed the reason for the headaches: germinoma, a rare cancer in the brain and spine. He had tumors in three of the four major areas of his brain. It was recommended he start an aggressive ......
Scouts in girls Troop 606 of Chicago recently reviewed the eight steps of handling an emergency as outlined in the First Aid merit badge pamphlet. As they went over the steps, the girls decided to create a mnemonic device, similar to the one they learned for Leave No Trace principles. Take a look below at what the Scouts came up with, and see how their memory trick could be handy for your Scouts as well. ‘Handling an emergency’ hand signals 1. Check the Scene Hold one finger up to your temple and turn your head slowly, taking in the ......
Keep your campsite bright at night with these great camping lanterns and lighting devices. BIOLITE BASE LANTERN XL Described by its maker as the world’s first flatpack lantern, the ultra-packable BIOLITE BASE LANTERN XL ($130) produces 500 lumens, enough light to brighten a spacious campsite. It pairs with a Bluetooth app to open up a host of features like proximity activation, dimming and sleep timers. The two collapsible stainless steel legs give it stability in a variety of situations. Its powerful battery recharges via USB at home or with BioLite solar panels (sold separately), and it will charge four ......
Smart, talented and brave. A friend to those in need. Someone who relishes learning new skills. While one group carries hiking sticks and the other lightsabers, I’d argue that Scouts and Jedi have more in common than you might think. The heroes of the Star Wars saga lived “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, †but their spirit of selfless service lives on in young people wearing blue, khaki or green. Maybe the heroes of today can’t move things just by looking at them, but they make amazing things happen anyway. And when they do, they ......
All through Girl Guides, we encourage girls to take action to protect the planet, and that mantra has slowly started making its way into other parts of my life. After making some changes at home this summer I started thinking about just how much plastic waste we create in our units on a weekly basis. There’s a lot of things we might not think about – between balloons at enrolment, fun foam hearts on Valentine’s Day, plastic plates and crafts made from Styrofoam cups, we use and throw out more plastic than we realize each year in our units. ......

Scouts like to collect things, especially badges and crests. But once you have them, where do you keep them? Podcast Topics First up, an important note: apparently, some podcatcher apps filter out episodes marked as Bonus or Trailer from podcast feeds by default. So if you haven’t seen an episode from us since September...well, okay, it has actually been that long since we released a full episode. But we’ve been releasing Scouting Five episodes weekly since then, and if you haven’t been seeing those (they’re now tagged as Bonus), you may want to check your app’s settings. Meet Michelle, a proud Cub Scout mom. Scouting has had a tremendous impact on her family and - in her own words - helps her make the most of the time she has with her son. Like most parents, Michelle doesn't want to miss a moment of her son's childhood and Scouting has helped bring their family closer together in ways that few other youth programs can offer. Listen in as she shares her story and welcomes other families like hers to join the amazing programs of the Boy Scouts of America. Subscribe to Boy Scouts Of America: https://bit.ly/2pwnlQr ......

Just got done taking kids to a merit badge class (first aid) and it left me kind of scratching my head and I'm wondering if I'm the crazy one. The class charged $25/scout and as far as I could tell there was very little in the way of consumable materials. Don't get me wrong, they had some things and I know even "durable" equipment needs to get replaced occasionally. But $25/person seems well above the materials cost, transport fee, and a reasonable payment for the instructor (though I thought this was a volunteer job) I'm not trying to complain, but ......
