[ISSUE 667 – 20TH YEAR OF HELPING SCOUTS, SCOUTERS, PARENTS] Last week and the week before, I handled some letters about uniforms and flag details. Turns out we have a couple more points to cover, so here we go— Hi Andy, A “uniform” might even be uniform. But as it is, there’s actually no uniformity and there’s a wide price range among BSA-branded garments. Look at male youth Scout pants—they range from $20 to $45, and today’s teens know who’s in the cheapest version and who’s wearing the most expensive. Wy different price-points? Simple: “choice drives sales, ” and ......

Owen Raiche receives the National Certificate of Merit for Heroic Actions Last night at Troop 160 Lexington’s Zoom meeting, Owen Raiche was recognized with a National Certificate of Merit. On September 14, 2019 Life Scout Owen Raiche was attending a neighborhood association party at The Green Banana Park on Hayes Avenue in Lexington.  During the party Mrs. Cerise Keim started to choke on a piece of hamburger.  When Owen noticed Mrs. Keim was in distress, giving the universal chocking signal, Owen administered the Heimlich maneuver and helped dislodge the piece of hamburger allowing her to begin to breathe again. Owen ......

March 2021Time to make: 3 hoursFinishing: 1 hour  Boys life: May 1983 p. 67  Original design:  Fritz Hines  When thinking about what to write about cowboys, I came across a couple of interesting quotes.  The first is from Gary Benton.   "Cowboys are my heroes and always have been. They are a complex mixture of compassion, honesty, integrity, and bluntness. They're not the simple folks they project and deep thinking often takes place behind the unblinking eyes. Often they speak little, but listen a lot, because a closed mouth can hear better and learn more."  ......

When heading out behind the wheel for an evening errand or weekend adventure, remember to follow the Scout Motto and BPRPRD. If you spot a motorist in distress, try to keep in mind the Scout Slogan and DAGTD. Do all those things, and your fellow travelers won’t be surprised to see you’re an EGLSCT, EGLMOM or EGLDAD. In the universe of Scouting-themed personalized license plates, some four- to seven-character combos are pretty easy to figure out. Even with some letters removed, we still quickly recognize phrases like Be Prepared, Do a Good Turn Daily, Eagle Scout, Eagle Mom and Eagle ......

From Scouting’s earliest days, adults quickly realized the movement’s ideals would be perfect for youth in their communities. Some formed troops before the Boy Scouts of America was even founded. That makes it difficult to identify the first Boy Scout troop in the U.S. However, finding the first Black troop is challenging for different reasons. The outreach to Blacks, Native Americans, Latinos and other ethnic and racial groups was basically non-existent early on, and as such, very few troops formed. Records for these troops were also not well-documented, but one troop is highlighted — and it’s one that often receives ......

During a brisk February weekend last year, Scouts made the drive to Camp Frank G. Lumpkin in far west Georgia, searching for adventure, advancement and entertainment. But what they discovered was so much more. The girls of Troop 19 from Auburn, Alabama, hosted a “Woods Women” campout, inviting two other troops: girls Troop 89 from Columbus, Ga., and girls Troop 307 from Montgomery, Ala., for a challenging excursion of Scout skills. “Basically, we got a bunch of girls together from different troops near us and we did fun activities that helped with advancement — anything from knot-tying to fire-building ......

I recently received a free copy of Getting Started in Pinewood Derby by Troy Thorne. This colorful workbook goes through all of the steps involved in building a car. My favorite thing about the book is that it is directed at Cub Scouts – who should be doing most of the work on their cars. It includes lots of very nice step-by-step photos, so young car builders can understand what needs to be done. The book is divided into 7 “sessions”, which help keep the process from seeming overwhelming to a young Scout: Shopping ......

Scouts shouldn’t be menaces to their neighbors, but according to one cartoon, one got into his fair share of trouble. The “Dennis the Menace” comic debuted in March 1951. Since then, the mischievous 5-year-old that cartoonist Hank Ketcham created has been featured in 1, 000 newspapers in 48 countries as well as in advertisements, comic books, television cartoons, a live TV show (1959-1963) and a 1993 movie. Over the years, he has often expressed his desire to join the Boy Scouts of America, and in a recent comic that you might’ve seen during the Be the Change event celebrating the ......

Photo: Parks and protected areas are experiencing heightened levels of visitation and related impacts.  The tourism industry is enormous — in 2019, it generated more than $1.1 trillion in revenues for just the United States market. Although the 2020 numbers were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, research conducted by the Leave No Trace Center and Penn State showed a pronounced shift toward outdoor, nature-based activities occurred, meaning that parks and protected areas across the nation experienced impacts related to heavy use from both tourists and local residents. “One of the key takeaways from our research is that a large ......

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 Dr. Seuss Day is a day to celebrate the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, the wonderful books he wrote, and reading in general. Cub Scouts can be encouraged to read a Dr. Seuss book on this day. Older Scouts could also have fun doing a “dramatic reading” of one of these books at a meeting. How do ......

With a budget of half a million dollars and responsibility for nearly 7, 000 undergraduates, Noah Harris has come a long way since he was elected patrol leader in Troop 90 of Hattiesburg, Miss. But Harris says he never would’ve become president of Harvard’s Undergraduate Council without his experience in Scouting. Late last year, Harris made national headlines as the first Black man elected student body president of Harvard. He says he felt comfortable taking the post thanks in part to Scouting, where young people practice leadership skills in a safe but challenging environment. “Being a patrol leader requires you ......

The pandemic didn’t stop Scouts from earning merit badges in 2020, but it did cause a dramatic shift in which merit badges Scouts earned most. Ever since we started publishing merit badge rankings back in 2012, the top of the list has been dominated by merit badges that are both: On the list of Eagle-required merit badges. Offered at most council summer camps. But everything changed in 2020. With the majority of summer camps not operating, the popularity of those merit badges fell. In their place, we saw an unprecedented rise in the popularity of merit badges that can ......

There’s an argument to be made for having a physical copy of important outdoor survival information. Podcast Topics Ken and Colin discuss the venerable Field Book for Canadian Scouting, once a staple of a Scout’s program materials in Scouts Canada’s program, and now an often-pricey collector’s item. This episode isn’t intended as an endorsement of any of the below-mentioned materials; it’s more a curated list of works that Ken and Colin have come across over the years. The Field Book may be out of print, but there are several reasonable alternatives available. Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts might find some ......

My scout group was way more religious like 10/15 years ago, we went to church every sunday on camps, prayed before every meal etc. But as the years went by, more and more of the (younger) leaders and scouts became atheists/non religious, or were never religious in the first place. The problem: our law and promises are christian. We are a christian group atleast in name/statute. The law states: to be loyal to god and the church, and it's in our promise too. It causes more and more problems, because an increasing number of scouts and leaders doesn't identify with ......
