[NO. 671 – 20TH YEAR OF HELPING SCOUTS, SCOUTERS, PARENTS] Hi Andy, A local troop has invited me—their Unit Commissioner—to sit on a board of review for a young man destined to be their newest Eagle Scout. Is there any protocol issue with someone in my position (i.e., UC) to do this? I figure I meet the “fog a mirror” criterion, but is there something else that would prevent me from doing this that I don’t know about. By the way, yes, I’m an Eagle Scout myself (if that makes a difference). (Will Mitchell, Milwaukee Area Council, WI) I ......

Nearly 1, 000 young women were recognized as part of the inaugural female Eagle Scout class, and 10 of them are members of Troop 19 in Ridgefield, Conn. The troop, named in honor of the 19th Amendment, is an active troop, both in seeking adventures and recruiting Scouts. It began Feb. 1, 2019, with fewer than 15 Scouts — now, their roster has nearly doubled. Many have brothers — younger and older — who had already joined Scouting. “I always wanted to join them, but I had to sit out, ” says Maya Pereyra, 16. “Now, I can have the ......

Scouting volunteers are smart, supportive — and really good at research. Last month, we wrote about Harry Cooper of Missouri, who was believed to be the first Black Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts of America history. The key phrase: “believed to be.” When you’re talking about something that happened more than a century ago — when records weren’t searchable, sortable and backed up to the cloud — it’s difficult to say anything absolute. Eagle-eyed readers who made it to the end of that post saw this paragraph: “Even [Andy] Dubill, who made the Cooper discovery, admits that new original documents ......

A Scout parent asked this question in our Scout Moms, Dads, and Leaders Facebook group What is the best backpack to get my scout for 1-2 night hikes? The group members had several suggestions based on their experience. Here is a summary. Entry Level Scout Backpack Concerning size: “It all depends on the size of the scout and how much gear they are taking with them. I’d probably recommend at least a 40L hiking backpack, that’ll let ......

Some say that when it was done growing, the row of tables stretched on for a quarter mile. But it started small, as these things tend to. It started with five troops from five different countries sitting down for dinner together at the 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan. “A few of the units near our campsite decided to gather together for dinner, ” says Mark Beese, Scoutmaster of World Scout Jamboree Troop 70302. “We pulled the tables from our sites and lined them end to end in the grass avenue in front of our camps.” One table per patrol, ......

The Pizza Man song is a camp classic. This is one of those songs that has many different versions and they are all fun.  All of the catch phrases rhyme (somewhat) with “man” and a lot of emphasis is usually put on the rhyme. The leader sings each line and then the audience repeats it. Each verse has an action to go with it. At the end of the verse, the catch phrase and action for all of the previous verses are repeated. Some suggested actions are shown in brackets below, but the leader can make up ......

Over the decades, the Boy Scouts of America has been a leader in developing training and policies designed to keep young people safe. Over time, these policies have become standard with organizations across the nation. True youth protection can be achieved only through the focused commitment of everyone in Scouting. It is the mission of Youth Protection volunteers and professionals to work within the Boy Scouts of America to maintain a culture of Youth Protection awareness and safety at the national, regional, area, council, district, and unit levels. We have heard your feedback and are now releasing updates to the ......

Despite the pandemic, Scouts continue to serve their communities. While we take a face covering with us when we head out now, it’s important to remind ourselves what else we need to do to keep safely serving. Take a look at these two updated risk assessment tools: the SAFE service project planning checklist and the SAFE project tool use guidelines; you can also find both in the appendix to the Guide to Safe Scouting. SAFE is an acronym for safety points Scouts and Scouters should abide by before any activity, including service projects. They are: Supervision Assessment ......

A fun method of campfire cooking that’s easy to try...but tricky to get right. Podcast Topics Ken and Colin discuss a particular sort of campfire cooking: placing foil-wrapped food directly on the embers after the fire has died down some. It’s an easy concept to grasp: you wrap your food up in foil, wait for the fire to burn down so that there’s a nice bed of hot coals, and the place the food directly on the embers for however long it takes to cook through (typically, turning it once). Of course, each step in the process presents certain challenges, ......

WAGGGS CSW delegate, Bernice Antoine, from Trinidad and Tobago, shares her call to action on women’s participation in decision making. To ensure girls and women in my community have effective participation in decision making my Government should institutionalise our voices and recognise we are experts of our own experience. This calls for a different kind of table one where rather than speaking on behalf of the voiceless, we give the voiceless the opportunity to speak on behalf of issues that relate directly to them. This calls for a different kind of table, a wider table, a ......
