(Taken from "Eagle Feathers" by Mike Walton (c)1997 ) He made me proud to be Black, a Scout, and a veteran all at the same time. I observed him as he carefully held the arms of the wheelchair, assisting the fragile old woman from her seat and into a waiting automobile. She must have offered him a tip for his kindness as he closed the door of the car."I'm sorry. They won't let us accept anything for our work. Besides, " I overheard him state as he sat down in the chair and turned it toward the ramp, "I'm a Boy ......

(This was originally written as part of my unpublished book "Eagle Feathers" in 2004.) A question posed to me -- surprising because of who asked the question -- made me think a lot about what the public thinks that Scouting is about and what little we've told them recently about what we do.I was standing on a platform at the Crystal City, Virginia stop along with the METRO, Washington D.C.'s series of underground trains which run between most of the communities in and around the capital city of our nation. The trains run underground and above-ground as well as they snake their way around ......

My family room has served as the troop’s Scout room for over two and a half decades. Patrol Leader Council meetings were held there, along with training sessions and some smaller troop activities. Committee meetings were held around the table once a month. One third of the room is a showcase for Scouting awards, memorabilia, and Eagle Scout photos. I was cleaning up and sorting through some things last night and discovered a little gem I forgot was part of my Scouting collection. It is a training flip chart from 1955 regarding patrol advancement. It is for ......
Andrew Stokes didn’t set out to earn every one of the BSA’s top awards for youth. He just enjoyed the journey of Scouting and discovered that advancing in rank and completing award requirements came naturally. It started when Andrew earned his first BSA award at age 8. The Cub Scout religious emblem, worn with pride on his blue uniform shirt, taught him “how to build a closer relationship with God, ” he says. And now, after 12 years of unforgettable adventures, Andrew has earned the top award in every BSA program — the Arrow of Light (Cub Scouts), Eagle Scout ......
I recently got an email about some new resources for Cub Scout leaders. So I wanted to share these with you in case you haven’t seen them yet. Den Leader Tips and Tricks videos I’ll also try to link to specific videos in my various pages each Cub Scout Adventure, to make it easier for you to find the ......

The trucker's hitch is a compound knot commonly used for securing loads on trucks or trailers. This general arrangement, using loops and turns in the rope itself to form a crude block and tackle, has long been used to tension lines and is known by multiple names. Knot author Geoffrey Budworth claims the knot can be traced back to the days when carters and hawkers used horse-drawn conveyances to move their wares from place to place. Part 2 explores transportation and weather while kayaking. Don't forget to watch Part 1; safety and basic skills. ......
