It’s here! Today is officially International Day of the Girl Child, an observance created by the United Nations to emphasize girls worldwide and bring awareness to challenges and opportunities for girls around the globe. It’s a day to celebrate ALL girls and their incredible potential – as well as what they’re already doing – to change the world. Our celebration kicked off early with Girl Scouts Change the World, a virtual event sponsored by the LEGO® Group, on Saturday, October 9. With over 10, 000 girls, leaders and more registered to attend, our event included amazing stories from Girl Scouts around the country, along with exciting guest appearances, including LEGO Brickmaster Amy Corbett and incredible artist (and Gold Award Girl Scout) Dana Tanamachi, who created an incredible piece of art just for the event! Original Artwork by Dana Tanamachi From break-out sessions on key ......

Gary Paulsen, author of popular wilderness adventure novels such as Hatchet, The River and Brian’s Winter, and a longtime contributor to Boys’ Life (now Scout Life) magazine, has died. He was 82. Paulsen was a three-time winner of Newbery Honors, presented to the best books of the year as determined by the Association for Library Service to Children. Dogsong (1986), Hatchet (1988) and The Winter Room (1990) all earned the recognition. Hatchet was also named to Scout Life magazine’s list of 100 Books That Every Kid Should Read. “The world is far smaller with Gary Paulsen’s passing, ” says William E. Butterworth IV, former editor of Boys’ Life who worked with Paulsen many times over the years. “Beyond being the consummate storyteller, he was larger than life. It was a thrill to hear his weathered voice over the telephone and know that the conversation would produce yet another terrific short story adventure for Scouts ......

This is Unsung Heroes, a Bryan on Scouting blog series celebrating under-reported acts of Scouting heroism. These are stories that don’t make national headlines — but should. That’s doubly true in this world that can always use more good news. Read the latest story below, and find instructions for sharing your own Unsung Heroes story at the end of the post. ——- Mark Despard was downstairs at his grandparents’ house getting ready for school when he heard a thud upstairs. “I thought something bad might have happened, ” says the 15-year-old First Class Scout from Troop 34 of Willimantic, Conn. “I heard my grandfather calling for help.” He hurried upstairs, alerted his grandmother and they rushed to his grandfather’s side. His grandfather, Rene, had fallen and couldn’t feel the left half of his body. Rene had suffered a stroke. In the Scouts BSA Handbook, a stroke is described as a “hurry case, ” ......

Scouting was a spark that ignited a never-ending purpose in me to serve the community. Omkar Tamhane of Troop 27, chartered out of Johns Creek Christian Church, achieved Scouting greatness not once, but twice. In the fall of 2019, at the tender age of 15, Omkar earned the rank of Eagle – the ultimate achievement in Scouting and one that only about 6% of all eligible Scouts attain. Omkar’s second accomplishment is an even more impressive feat. Omkar earned every single one of the 137 Merit Badges – something less than 500 Scouts have achieved since Scouting’s inception in 1910. These incredible accomplishments were only made possible through Omkar’s ambition, work ethic, and leadership – traits he further exemplifies through his other community-oriented extracurricular activities and academic studies. Omkar took the time to discuss with us his journey in Scouting and ......

When welcoming new families to your Cub Scout pack at the beginning of the school year, learning all the new names takes perseverance, practice and patience. Even with those traits, remembering which Cub Scout is Evan and which is Devin still might take a meeting or two. Now imagine the pressure of learning names when your pack’s roster includes twins — not one or two sets of twins but six.  “It was something of a ‘wow’ moment — something I had not even thought about until I started compiling the list of returning Scouts for this year, along with new Scouts who joined us after our big recruitment event, ” says Ashley Michel, Cubmaster of Pack 136 from Baton Rouge, La., part of the Istrouma Area Council. “As I started to add everyone’s names to my roster, I was mildly amused when I saw how many had the same last name in ......

The 12-volt battery in Troop 14’s trailer often drained, forcing adult leaders to jump it if the troop wanted to use the interior and exterior LED lights. For lighting in camp, the Metuchen, N.J., troop relied on propane lanterns. The Scouts also used propane for cooking. For a troop of more than 50 Scouts who love to go camping, that means a lot of propane. Adult leaders estimated the troop used as many as 20 20-pound tanks in a year. How did Troop 14 solve both costly, time-consuming problems? They used solar panels. After installing the panels to the trailer’s roof, the troop cut its propane budget, solved its battery issue and helped Scouts accomplish a few merit badge requirements. So, how did they do it? Going green Twenty years ago, Chris Katz bought two used 75-watt solar panels from a shuttered resort in Belize. He gifted them to ......

Everything Michael Conner needed to know about flag etiquette he learned from his 1971 Boy Scout Handbook. “I still have that copy, ” the former professional Scouter says.  Fifty years later, Conner is now a husband and father. And he still treats the flag with the same respect and reverence he learned as a Scout.  Each morning, he places one of his 25 flags on the pole outside his home. Before dark, he removes the flag and carefully folds it the proper way. In rain, snow or other inclement weather, Conner removes the flag and stores it till the sun returns. “In a word, it’s about respect, ” the former Air National Guardsman says. “And one more word: thankfulness.” Conner is a former camp staffer and former district executive from Terre Haute, Ind., part of what was previously called the Wabash Valley Council and is now the Crossroads of America ......

The pieces continue to fall into place for the 2023 National Jamboree. Earlier today, the BSA’s National Executive Board announced that former BSA National Commissioner Tico Perez will serve as the 2023 National Jamboree Chair. Perez will immediately begin recruiting the rest of the leadership team for the 2023 event, which will be held July 19-28 at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. “I am honored to be selected as Jamboree Chair, ” says Perez, an Eagle Scout who has also received the Silver Buffalo and Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service awards. “Jamborees create lasting memories for everyone involved. I can’t wait to get started.” Decades of service In addition to serving as National Commissioner from 2008-2016, Hector A. Perez — known as “Tico” to his many, many friends — has served on the National OA Committee and as president of the Central Florida Council. He has also ......
