Have you ever thought about how Scouting is much like a chain? Check out this Scoutmaster Minute...

You've heard the saying, "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link." That's absolutely true. With this chain, I can pull a car or lift a heavy load - I can perform many tasks. But, if I try to lift something that is too heavy, one of the links will break - the weakest link will let down the rest of the chain.

In Scouting, each scout works on personal advancement to strengthen and improve skills. Personal advancement increases the strength of each link in our chain so we can accomplish more.

But, there will always be a weakest link. No matter what the task at hand, some people will be less skilled than the others. Someone will not be able to tie a certain knot, or kindle a fire, or hike as fast, or recite as well as the others. At some point, each of you will be the weakest link - I guarantee it! Being the weakest link is not a shameful thing - it is an opportunity for improvement.

One of the best things about Scouting is that our "chain" is better than a simple metal chain. When we have a task to do, we are not really limited by our weakest link. The other stronger or more skilled or more experienced links support the weaker links. They help them, teach them, and guide them. As a result, we accomplish much more than if we each just did our specific task and left the rest.

Do your best not to be the weakest link - for yourself and your patrol and your troop. Learn skills, take on challenges, grow! But, be aware that around here, the weakest link one day might be the strongest the next - and the strongest may be the weakest.

We do not receive funding from anywhere except our few sponsors and our users. If you would like to help check out https://insanescouter.org/p/5875/0/Support+Us.html

Yesterday I spent the day picking two collections that were within an hour drive of my house. On one of those I learned quite a bit about how probate works and got a good reminder of why we all need a will. In this case a ladies first cousin passed away in FLA with no will and no natural heirs. She stepped in through the courts to be the executor of the estate which was complicated but thankfully her cousins were happy for her to take the lead. He had a couple boxes of Scout stuff that including his grandfathers 1934 Silver Beaver medal from a North Carolina council (which is pretty cool!). Here is a Scoutmaster minute which is appropriate this time of year when we are considering what it truly means to be grateful. While this reflection does not address thankfulness to the Creator, as is usually associated with the holiday, it does cultivate a spirit of appreciation and gratitude to those who went before us. Challenge your Scouts BSA to show their appreciation for those who have passed on their ideals by doing more than just saying the Scout Oath and Law, but by living them. Gratitude Scoutmaster Minute John F. Kennedy said As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. As Scouts BSA we should remember this every time we say the Scout Oath and Scout Law. These should not just ......

This is the 39th in an occasional series where I share Eagle Scout project before-and-after photos. See the complete collection here and submit your own here. COVID-19 note: Photos were taken during different stages of the pandemic (or even before the pandemic began) and may not necessarily depict current coronavirus-related health and safety protocols. To fully understand the impact Eagle Scout projects have on communities, you need to see to believe. That’s why I asked to see Eagle Scout project before-and-after photos — the same photos prospective Eagles are asked to include with their post-project report. The latest batch of 15 projects includes an outdoor kitchen for a Montessori school in Texas, a “Pollinators Garden” for a wildlife refuge in Puerto Rico and a realistic Mars landscape for a college in New York. What’s great is that you can multiply each individual act of stupendous service by roughly 50, 000. That’s how many Eagle Scout projects get completed ......

For 40 years, Jeff Rand traveled the United States, crisscrossing the country to help BSA units, districts and councils give their Scouts the best experience possible. Rand traveled so much during his BSA career that he eventually visited every county (and county equivalent — like parishes, boroughs and independent cities) in the United States. He even took his travels to new heights by climbing to the highest point in all 50 states — a 15-year journey we documented upon its completion in 2019.  After retiring, you might think Rand would want to settle down and just sit still for a while. But that’s simply not how this Eagle Scout lives his life. In 2021, Rand set out to ride 50 miles in all 50 states. He would once again crisscross the country, but this time he’d experience each state’s unique culture and geography from his Trek touring bike.  To make things more ......

About the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge By working on the requirements for the Citizenship in Society merit badge, Scouts learn that we all benefit when everyone is included and has a voice. Scouts learn about diversity, equity, and inclusion. They also explore ethical leadership and how being an upstander helps others feel respected and valued. There is no merit badge pamphlet with all of the answers for this badge. Scouts will need to research and formulate answers on their own. The Citizenship in Society Merit Badge is required for the rank of Eagle Scout starting in July 2022.   A busy October of camp promotion wraps up today as we host an open house at Camp Barstow to meet units interested in learning more about the camp. So far this month I’ve been on a 1600 mile trip through Florida and a much shorter trip to Rock Hill, SC to talk to units about our camp. In the age of the Internet camps have to really do the extra mile (LOL) to convince units to come during the summer. Read more on Sunday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter October 24, 2021…...

The first new merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program since 2017 officially launches today. Called Citizenship in Society, it provides Scouts with opportunities to learn more about our world by encouraging them to explore information on diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership — and to learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting. To earn the merit badge, Scouts must conduct research; explore resources; have conversations with merit badge counselors, peers,  parents and community members; and identify actions they can take to ensure inclusivity and belonging in Scouting and society in general. The full requirements for the merit badge and materials for merit badge counselors can be found at scouting.org/dei. How it works One of the unique features of Citizenship in Society is that there is no merit badge pamphlet with prescribed approaches or ideologies. There also are no requirements meant to drive a particular response or lead a Scout down a path toward a ......

The Beatles inspired a generation of legendary musicians, including performers like Dave Grohl, Joe Walsh and Joni Mitchell. Those three singer-songwriters, and countless more, have said they were influenced by the music of John, Paul, George and Ringo. But who inspired the Beatles? There are the well-publicized answers like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. And then there are the lesser-known influences, like the global movement known as Scouting. We know that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were Scouts in England as boys. In fact, in the summer of 1957, McCartney had to miss his first scheduled gig with Lennon and the Quarrymen — the band that later evolved into the Beatles — because McCartney and his brother were at Scout camp. Priorities! There’s even more. We recently learned of another Scouting connection to the legendary British rock group. Writing for The New Yorker in its Oct. 25, 2021, ......

I'm on the hunt for somewhere I can buy a traditional scout "Lemon Squeezer" campaign hat somewhere in the UK. Scout Shops used to sell them, but they've recently disappeared from the website, probably because nobody was buying them as they're not TSA uniform. The only ones I can find online are on places like Etsy, where private sellers want silly amounts of money for them. So, anyone know where I could source one for a more reasonable sum? submitted by /u/OGU_Lenios [link] [comments]...

Hello there. I was doing some research on Boy Scouts Of America, and I found out that they did not allow atheists to participate. In scouting rules, it states that a member must profess a belief in God. However, rules actually don't define what is meant by the term "God". Confusingly, the organisation claims to "not allow atheists", yet allows members of atheistic religions to participate, such as Jains and Buddhists. (yes, I know some Buddhists believe in deities, but others don't). Do you find this hypocritical? Should I e-mail them for clarification? Can you think of any semantic ways they could justify this? Thanks. submitted by /u/AbiLovesTheology [link] [comments]...
