Hello and Welcome Back! Scouter Training is closer to employee training than active Scouting. Sitting through scripted sessions punctuated by unrealistic, often dated, videos is one way to learn, but it’s not the best way to learn Scouting. I’ve never been a good classroom student, I learn more by doing, so I tend to value hands on experience. Experiential, “on the job”, learning is more true to Scouting’s purposeful game than training administrators to deliver a scripted program. Scouter training, however, is not without value. I encourage Scouters to avail themselves of training opportunities, and also acknowledge it is just ......

The Girl Guides origin story is a story of girl empowerment. It all began in 1909 when a group of courageous girls gate-crashed a Boy Scout rally in London, demanding they be included. More than 100 years later, girls are still showing the world what they can do. In 150 countries around the world, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are an unstoppable powerhouse – busting stereotypes and making a difference in the world. Since the start of the year, we’ve been inviting conversations about each of the five girl-driven pillars (check out our ......

In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America celebrated 100 years of Scouting, and in appreciation of all that our founding members do, the BSA created the Founders Bar recognition patch. The Founders Bar recognizes the extreme importance of forming and nurturing a new Scouting unit. The Bar encourages multiple-year rechartering so that new units can continue to be identified and members can continue to wear the patch.  Who can wear the Founders Bar? The Founder’s Bar can be worn by youth and adults whose names are on a new-unit charter or who joined the new unit before the unit rechartered for the ......

A patrol hikes to a Survivorman Challenge station, where they will be tested on their wilderness survival knowledge. Your flight home turned into a disaster. The plane crashed in a dense forest during a storm. Fortunately, you survived, but now you’re cold, wet, thirsty and lost. You scour through the plane wreckage and find a bottle of water. You guzzle down the refreshing drink and then start to move on. But wait — don’t throw away that bottle! You can place your thumbs over part of the bottle cap’s underside and blow, creating a makeshift emergency whistle. This is ......
