Wacky Scouters, guess what its time for another silly challenge. As always, feel free to tweak it to fit your needs.

1. Patrol members must continuously clap their hands during this entire challenge.

2. Have the Patrol form an 8-foot circle.

3. The judge will toss a ball to the Patrol Leader.

4. The Patrol must keep the ball in the air for 1 minute, using only their right feet.

5. Then the Patrol must keep the ball in the air for another 1 minute, using only

their left feet. The judge will tell the Patrol when to change feet.

Feel free to follow up with a reflection, maybe ask: What was it like trying to hear and follow instructions while clapping? What could you have done differently? Why was it so hard to keep the ball in the air for 1 minute? Did you have fun?

Q: My troop is going on a 25-mile hike soon. What is the best way to prepare for it? A: We went straight to an expert for this question: Joe Koehly, director and guide for Backwoods Adventures, which takes people hiking and backpacking all over the world. Here are his top tips: Make sure your boots are well fitted, are waterproof and provide ample ankle support when carrying a heavy load. Break them in before embarking on a hike. Do shorter training hikes wearing all the gear you’ll use on the trip. Make sure boots, socks, hiking shorts ......

[NO. 673 – 20TH YEAR OF HELPING SCOUTS, SCOUTERS, PARENTS] Hi Andy, I’ve recently been hearing about the BSA changing its national structure from four regions, each with six to nine “areas” within them (totaling 28), to a bunch of areas smaller than regions but larger than their former “areas” and called “National Service Territories.” Is this right? Are we going back to something like the dozen regions we had in the 1940s into the early 1970s era? (John Arable, DC, Great Plains Council, NE) Yup, you’ve got it right—There’s a reorg on its way, but it’s not “moving ......

Hydration packs have built-in access to water you can drink while you’re wearing the pack. They come in many designs and sizes, specialized for activities like hiking, mountain biking and running. Like a camel, these packs are equipped with a special bladder that lets you carry all your water on your body; you just drink it through a special straw. Consider these factors when choosing a hydration pack: It’s not surprising that the CAMELBAK M.U.L.E. ($115, camelbak.com) has long been a bestseller. With a narrow profile, moderate weight, multiple pockets and features, helmet attachments and a 3-liter ......

Every year since 2000, a group of kayakers paddle from Miami to Key West, Fla., to raise money in the fight against cancer. Over the years, the group, called Castaways Against Cancer, has raised more than $1.3 million, and this year’s trek might be its most successful. Two of the Castaways are BSA executives and Eagle Scouts. Anthony Berger, BSA’s national director of Cub Scouting, and Patrick Linfors, the Scout executive for the Garden State Council in New Jersey, along with a dozen other paddlers will make the 160-mile, weeklong journey this June. We reported on the duo’s 2018 trip. ......

Knots are a part of  Scoutcraft, but I have to admit that knots are not my strong suit.  I will learn a knot and be able to do it from memory, but then a few weeks later when I try to repeat, I find I need to learn it again. (My favorite knot book – shown on the right – has been a real lifesaver for me when working on knots.) The trail to the Eagle Scout Award has been conquered more than 2 million times, and yet no two Eagle Scouts are the same. Elaine Mitchell had that in mind when planning the Eagle Scout court of honor for her children, Marina and Grant. She wanted next month’s ceremony to include a souvenir program that was just as unique as her two new Eagle Scouts. While the Scout Shop sells this attractive, affordable 50 pack of program covers, Elaine was looking for a little more customization. “I looked and looked and couldn’t find anything I liked, ” she says, “so ......

When I got the phone call on this collection my ears lit up. On the other side of the line was an 86 year old gentleman who joined the Cub Scouts in 1944 went through the Boy Scout program in the years after the war and became an Explorer in 1950. This experience in Scouting included a 45 day trip via train to Philmont to take part in one of a month long Jr. Leader Training Experience.
