Welcome, InsaneScouter’s, to another fantastic issue of our weekly newsletter.

As a quick reminder, it would really help us out if you would let your Scouting friends know about us and this newsletter. You could even forward this newsletter to them and suggest they subscribe, or maybe print it out and share it at your local roundtable.

While you're at it, you can show your appreciation for our years of hard work by signing up for Patreon. Like my dog, Jack would say, “that would be tail-wagging awesome!”.

We have been helping Scouters just like you, for over 22 years. As of late I have been feeling really overwhelmed and stressed out because of everything that needs to get done on InsaneScouter. I estimate to give my team the kind of hours I am envisioning, I would need to raise approximately $1,500 a month. I can not swing that out of my own pocket, though I have been investing $500+ a month into the site. You can help by becoming a Patreon at https://patreon.com/insanescouter (it’s secure and safe) or PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=8WVWKK67YTLEL! I appreciate any help you can provide!

Thank You for your service to Scouting & for taking your time to look at our newsletters! Please let us know how we are doing and if there are any ways we can better help you.

Fashion trends ebb and flow. And while this blog probably isn’t the place to discuss the ins and outs of skinny jeans or no-show socks, there is one clothing debate we can settle once and for all. It’s a question that’s been asked since at least the 1990s, when I first joined Scouting: Should Scouts wear open-toe shoes or closed-toe shoes? The question hasn’t gone away in the decades since. Just this month, we heard from a volunteer named Kari Grantham, who writes: “We have lived in several states while Scouting, and every unit has said no open-toe shoes — ......

Even after leading one of the world’s largest companies and serving as Secretary of State, Distinguished Eagle Scout Rex Tillerson has never strayed far from his Scouting roots. In the latest example of his continued enthusiasm for the Scouting movement, the former CEO of ExxonMobil will participate in a fireside chat as part of Virtual Little Philmont 2021, a free event open to all members of the Scouting family. Tillerson, who served as BSA national president from 2010 to 2012, will open the event on Friday, May 21, with an inspiring message about the importance of religion in Scouting. On ......

The Forces of Flight game would make a fun addition to a pack meeting for the Soaring the Skies Cub Scout theme.  Use this game when the Cub Scouts have been sitting for too long and need to get up and move around. You can also use it to teach a brief lesson in science. This game was featured in one of the older Cub Scout program themes. Explore flight with paper airplanes Print Forces of Flight ......

Your unit might have big plans this year, but it’s important to remember what shouldn’t be on your schedule. Throwing boomerangs? Tree climbing? Cliff-diving? You can find a list of many prohibited activities here in the BSA’s Guide to Safe Scouting. The guide, introduced in 1991, isn’t meant to take the fun out of Scouting. It’s designed to keep everyone safe. But what if you don’t know if an activity is allowed or not if it’s not mentioned in the guide? A good rule is this: Is the activity in a handbook or other current literature of the Boy Scouts ......

Jennifer sent in a Bobcat advancement ceremony to share with all of you: I recently helped put together a bobcat ceremony for our space derby. Fiction by Jeff Kinney Illustrations by Kevin Keele Jayden was heading to camp, but all he could think of was cousin Elijah. A few hours earlier the two boys had been in Jayden’s room, and Jayden was stressed — for two reasons. For one, Jayden hadn’t finished packing, and his dad was already waiting out in the car. For two, Jayden’s older cousin, Elijah, was on Jayden’s bed, taking off his socks. “Yo, what’re you doing?” Jayden said angrily. Jayden picked Elijah’s sock off the floor, then dropped it when he realized it was wet with sweat. “Making myself at ......

I think this is one of those things which probably has about a hundred versions floating around out there. I’m going to give you the version I’m most familiar with and you can add your own variations in the comments. We have always done this as a cheer with two groups. The idea is to see which group can be the louder. This makes a fun activity for a Pack meeting or a campfire program. A former Cubmaster  used to write cheers down on slips of paper and put them in an empty Cheer ......

Nobody likes bug bites. And some insects can spread serious diseases, such as Lyme disease, West Nile virus and dengue fever. You can avoid biting insects using this three-part strategy. 1. DON’T GO WHERE BUGS ARE. Mosquitoes, ticks, no-see-ums, horseflies and the like generally emerge with warmer temperatures in spring. They thrive in wet places, especially around lakes and in forests. They persist into mid- or late summer or fall, depending on climate, disappearing once nights dip to freezing temperatures. • Think high and dry. Take trips to drier destinations at higher elevations. Insects often breed in boggy areas ......

Songs are a fun way to add some fun to a meeting or to get everyone involved in a campfire program. Some songs are silly. Some are repeat-after-me songs. Some get people up and moving. Scouts help other people at all times, and after a year of staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of them are excited to start serving their communities like they did pre-pandemic. If your Scout has read this month’s issue of Scout Life magazine, he or she would’ve seen senior editor Aaron Derr’s story on BSA’s Summer of Service campaign. It’s pretty simple to be part of it. Do a project or Good Turn and let the BSA know. That’s all there is to it. It’s a time to remind our country of the good Scouts do on a ......

If you’re supposed to bloom where you’re planted, then Life Scout Ian Simon is flourishing. And he’s helping a local orphanage do some growing of its own as well. For his Eagle Scout service project, Ian planned, developed and gave leadership to the construction of a hydroponic garden for an orphanage in the Central American country of Panama. Why Panama? It’s where Ian and his family have lived since 2012. Ian grew up as a Scout in North Carolina — a member of Pack 222 and Pack 97 of the Mecklenburg County Council. In 2012, Ian’s dad, Glenn, took a ......

So in the discussion we take it all the way back to Bill Price books of the 1970s to describe how far this has come. The next big leap forward that we cover is the 1979 publication of the Arapaho book which really helped the hobby. The key feature here was adding high quality images to help with the identification. ......
