You can trace Jeff Rand’s quest to become a “highpointer” all the way back to grade school. In fifth grade, Rand had to prepare a report on the state of his choice. He lived in Michigan but chose Colorado “because of its mountains.” “When I learned of Mount Elbert as the highest in the state and the Rockies, I wanted to climb it, ” he says. A few years later, Rand did just that, summiting the 14, 433-foot peak after attending the 1979 National Order of the Arrow Conference, held on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins. ......

Andy from Toy Story Bryan Wendell from Scouting Magazine gives all the evidence in his article about how beloved movie character, Andy from Toy Story, was definitely a Boy Scout! “Thanks to an eagle-eyed Scout from the Northeast Illinois Council, ” he says, “we have conclusive visual evidence that the owner of all those playthings in the Toy Story movies was in Scouting.” While watching the first Toy Story, released in 1995, keep your eyes peeled around the 1 hour and 16 minute mark. There, you will see a ......

No lie – joining the National Youth Council has been a life-changing experience for each and every one of us. There have been so many skills learned, memories made, and laughs had. Working with these girls and being able to make a real difference in the organization is an experience that none of us will forget. This council has given us a platform to speak up on issues that matter to us and to other girls. Girl Guides has given us a place where our voice is heard and valued. With applications now open to join the ......

Did you know that just one in four Americans is able to name all three branches of government? It’s an alarming statistic, but Girl Scouts—drawing on our 100-plus years of inspiring girls to become engaged citizens—is taking the lead to power the next generation of change-makers. Last month, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) joined bipartisan congressional leaders for Civics Education: Preparing the Next Generation of Informed and Engaged Citizens, an event focused on the importance of educating and engaging today’s youth in civics. An all-star panel of civic leaders came together at the Ford Foundation Center ......

This is Unsung Heroes, a Bryan on Scouting blog series celebrating under-reported acts of Scouting heroism. These are stories that don’t make national headlines — but should. That’s doubly true in this world that can always use more good news. Read the latest story below, and find instructions for sharing your own Unsung Heroes story at the end of the post.  When someone bullies another person, all it takes is a single brave and kind person to step and step in. All it takes is someone like Bryan Fencl. Bryan, a 9-year-old Bear from the BSA’s San Diego-Imperial Council, ......

Guest post by Lauren H., an 18-year-old Gold Award Girl Scout from Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama  I completed my Girl Scout Gold Award in the summer of 2017 before I began my senior year of high school. I designed a government camp for underprivileged girls by working in tandem with Girls Inc. in Birmingham through their summer camps for girls. For three days, the girls and I worked through the ins and outs of local, state, and federal legislative processes, like writing, proposing, voting on, and passing bills for Congress, as well as running for a political office. ......

Don't tell anyone! We had to steal an egg from a local farmer as the supermarket did not have any brown eggs. Don't worry, we did not get caught or did we? My sister and I find a local chicken farm to raid his chicken coupe for brown eggs. Then we use those eggs in an experiment with Coke and Pepsi Products. Can you guess what we will be doing? Have you ever wondered if cola really can dissolve an egg after just a short period of time, we did. ......

Girls and women in Guiding are always proud to wear the Girl Guide uniform. It’s a way of showing we belong to an inclusive and powerful sisterhood focused on creating a better world, by girls. Our new uniform – a T-shirt and for the first time ever, a long-sleeved tunic for girls who prefer more modest dress – has become a reflection of Guiding as a place where all women and girls are welcome and can feel a sense of belonging. Designed with input from girls the uniform is modern, stylish, practical – and affordable....
