Hey Scouters, let's do something a bit different this week. It's challenge time! Feel free to tweak this as you see fit for your own unit. For example, instead of a committee member, maybe it should be an SPL, ASPL, Troop Guide, JASM, etc.

1. Only Patrol Members with brown eyes may speak.

2. Have each Patrol member obtain a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.

3. Have each Patrol member, working alone, draw as many official map symbols

as possible in one minute.

4. Have the Patrol compile as many different map symbols as possible, from each

Patrol members papers, in 1 minute.

5. Have the Patrol draw a map of a fictional kingdom, using only the map

symbols your patrol has compiled and present/explain it to any Troop

Committee member.

You can follow up on the challenge with a reflection asking the Scouts how it felt that only those with brown eyes could talk? Do they think that might be similar to how those of different skin colors or religions might feel sometimes? How many map symbols were they able to remember and draw? What might the rules of their fictional kingdom be? Would it be fair if that kingdom had a rule that only those with blue eyes would-be leaders?

I hope that gives you some ideas. If you find this or any of our other thoughts helpful, please check into our Knapsack package, we would really appreciate your support. https://insanescouter.org/p/5875/0/Knapsack.html

When I was a younger boy, one of the things I used to enjoy doing was going down into the #8 Woods and going rock hunting with my dad. He got me interested in looking for Indian arrowheads and also looking for fossils among the stones as we looked around the woods. There was a place at the edge of the woods that had been excavated a little bit, and the turned over soil was an excellent place to find stones of all types. The fossilized stones I saw got me thinking and wondering about dinosaurs and the creatures that ......

(From "Patches and Pins..." by Mike Walton (c) 1994. )When I was growing up in Rose Terrace, just about everyone did car washes to raise money for some organization or another. A car wash was cheap to run....get some detergent, some sponges and old shirts, towels and some dishwashing liquid. And lots of water. Go out someplace hopefully on a sunny, clear day, set up the signage, and you're in business! Not a lot of people spend time like they used to washing their cars. It used to be a Saturday morning or afternoon ritual....but then, that's why we made a ......

As Yvonne Lindquist designed her son’s retirement gift — a quilt featuring squares of meaningful moments in his life — one organization quickly came to mind: the Boy Scouts of America. Col. Robert Bertrand of Carlisle, Pa., retired this past summer after nearly 30 years in the U.S. Army. He was an Army Ranger, an arctic paratrooper, and a brigade leader. He tackled dangerous assignments in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya. Before all of that, he was a Scout in Troop 12 of Ferndale, Wash. The ideals and responsibilities he learned then proved valuable in his military career — and ......

Thousands of years ago, ancient astronomers observed the night sky and saw stars bunched together in what they called constellations. In one part of the sky, there was a group of stars that looked like a connect-the-dots lion, and they named it Leo. In another part, they saw stars that looked like a hunter with a belt, club, and shield, and they named it Orion. Lots has changed since then, but those same constellations remain. In fact, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) has recognized 88 different constellations with no star appearing in more than one. Stargazing is one of the ......

A fuzz stick is a fire starting aid and a good way to practice knife skills. A fuzz stick is a stick which has been shaved on the side, leaving thin scraps of wood. These scraps catch fire easily, which helps get your fire going. Learn more about how to make a fuzz stick in this article from Boys Life Magazine....

Serious mountaineers, polar explorers, and other adventurers who routinely face extreme cold follow a hard-and-fast rule: Always bring extra gloves because losing the use of your hands creates a life-threatening situation. You might never encounter such danger, but whatever your outdoor activities, the choice of handwear matters a lot. GLOVES OR MITTENS BUYING TIPS Gloves offer much better dexterity, while mittens keep your hands and fingers warmer by enclosing them in the same space rather than separating them. • For moderate-exertion winter activities in which dexterity isn’t critical, like skiing, choose mittens for very cold temperatures or gloves for moderately ......

Hey there! I'm a German Scout and as you can imagine Covid is preventing regular troop meetings and the like over here. Now, offering live online activities for Scouts is relatively straightforward, but trying to do the same thing for Wolf Cubs often doesn't work as well (imo): you might need adult supervision for things to run smoothly. We've been offering activities such as recording bedtime stories, providing puzzles and crafting challenges for kids to work on at home, but I'm always looking for new ideas to make things less boring. Soo... How has Scouting dealt with the pandemic in ......
