Summer Camps and Camp Raymond

By: Posted On: 2019-05-16

Lord Baden-Powell said that a week of camp life is worth 6 months of theoretical teaching in the meeting room. With those words from the founder of Boy Scouting, we will learn about Camp Raymond which is part of the Grand Canyon Council of Northern Arizona.

The camp's website is https://www.campraymond.org/. Camp Raymond is located on the edge of the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness Area, near Williams, Arizona. The camps GPS coordinates are 35.138402 -111.972864.

Nestled in the cool pines of Northern Arizona at 6700 feet, Williams has a cool-summer Mediterranean climate On average in Williams, December is the coldest month, July is the warmest month, and August is the wettest month. The average temperature is 50.6 degrees. Summer highs make it into the low 80’s with lows dropping into the mid 50’s each night. Each of their campsites is located under tall, cool ponderosa pine trees and most sites are only a short walk from the center of camp. All campsites have picnic tables, latrines, washstands, and a flagpole.

Camp Raymond campers can choose from two different camping adventures: Four Peaks or Sycamore high adventure programs can be selected. If you choose the Four Peaks adventure you will hike over 14,000 vertical feet in a single week and enjoy unique experiences for each mountain that you hike over. The Sycamore high adventure campers will select four days of activities from choosing to ride ATV’s, going caving, climbing the cliffs of Paradise Cliffs, shooting, mountain biking, go canyoneering. Merit badges are available for C.O.P.E., snorkeling, mountain biking, shooting, and several others. Camp Raymond has a mess hall for central dining and all meals are provided by the camp.

The minimum age for those Scouts who choose the Four Peaks adventure is 15 (also limited to 12 participates per session). The minimum age for Sycamore high adventure campers is 14.
