Hey Scouters,
It’s that time of year again—summer is just around the corner, and that means one thing: adventure! I can practically smell the campfire smoke and feel the warm breeze on my face already. There’s just something magical about the summer months, when Scouts get to explore the world outside, discover new skills, and maybe even get a little muddy while doing it.
Whether it’s heading off to summer camp, spending a weekend under the stars on a campout, or just a few hours of hiking to the next lookout point, there’s an adventure waiting for every Scout this summer. And let’s not forget those silly days in the water—whether it’s swimming, canoeing, or water balloon fights, fun is definitely on the agenda.
But before we dive headfirst into the fun, it’s important to get ready. As much as we want the adventure to be all about the excitement, preparation is key. I mean, have you ever showed up to a campout and realized you forgot your tent poles? Or that one time you left the food cooler behind and had to improvise with MREs? Yeah… not fun.

So, as we get ready for the summer ahead, here are a few things I’ve learned over the years that will help you and your Scouts make the most of it:
- Check your gear: Make sure your tents, sleeping bags, and cooking gear are in tip-top shape. If anything’s worn out or missing, now’s the time to replace it. Trust me, you don’t want to be scrambling when you’re out in the middle of the woods.
.
- Plan for the unexpected: Weather can be unpredictable, especially in the summer. A quick downpour can change your plans in an instant. Make sure you’re prepared for all kinds of conditions—extra layers, rain gear, sunscreen, and plenty of water!
- Stay hydrated: With the sun shining bright, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Keep those water bottles full and encourage your Scouts to take regular water breaks.
- Safety first: Whether you’re hiking, canoeing, or building fires, safety is always the priority. Review safety protocols with your Scouts, especially around things like fire safety and water activities. A little prep goes a long way.
- Set a good example: Your Scouts are always watching, and your actions will set the tone for the trip. Be the role model they need—whether it’s pitching in to help with the cleanup, offering a hand on a tough trail, or just keeping a positive attitude.
- Embrace the journey: And finally, don’t forget to have fun. Sometimes, the best adventures come from the moments we least expect. Whether it’s bonding over shared stories around the campfire or discovering a new trail, the journey itself is what makes it all worthwhile.
So, Scouts—are you ready? Get your gear, gather your crew, and let’s make this summer one to remember!
Keep On Wacky Scouting,
Scott Robertson
