Did you know that you can make your very own compass using just a leaf and a needle?

It's something straight out of the movies, but really, it's really simple and lots of fun—ideal for a bit of home or backyard science adventure!

Here's the process: First, take a sewing needle (be careful—it's sharp!) and rub it on your hair or a clump of wool 30–40 times. Why? Because this accumulates static electricity and imparts a small magnetic charge to the needle. Think of it as giving your needle a superhero boost!

Then, locate a small leaf—one that will float smoothly. Lay the needle on the leaf carefully. Now the leaf is a little boat, and the needle is the dashing captain navigating the magnetic waters!

Now, fill a bowl of water and allow your leaf-boat to float upon it. Observe closely—the needle will gradually revolve by itself and align in a north-south position. It feels like magic… but it is science!

This is a trick because the magnetized needle acts upon Earth's magnetic field, similar to a real compass. It's a wonderful way to learn about magnetism, navigation, and nature while laughing along!

So next time you're out and about and in the mood for a bit of adventure, have a go at making your own compass. Who knows? You may discover the way to secret treasure… or at least the snack cupboard!.
