Hey there, Scout Leaders!
Hope you're all doing well! I’ve got my paws crossed for some tail-wagging snow up here, but it seems like it’s all heading south! And my heart (and paws) are folded in prayer for everyone battling and affected by the LA Fires. Maybe all the doggies in the shelters could help the firefighters by marking the path ahead of the flames—now that’s teamwork!
On a more serious note, my poor dad has been running on empty since before Thanksgiving and didn’t even realize it. Last week, he hit full ADHD Shutdown mode—totally out of steam and couldn’t do a thing. He took four whole days off (which meant extra snuggles for me, woohoo!). He’s not back to full speed yet, but he’s getting there, one paw at a time.
This week, we’re going to be barking about "Leadership In Action!" And guess what? That also means taking care of yourself. After all, if you’re running on empty, how can you help your pack? The path forward is all about balance—the middle way—not too little and not too much. If we’re always sprinting, how far can we really go?
So, let’s sniff out some tips and ideas to help our Scouts (and ourselves) grow into strong, mindful leaders!
Tail wags and paw-fives,
Jack

Scoutmaster Minute: Leading Through the Fire
Scouts, have you heard about the wildfires raging in Los Angeles right now (Jan of 2025)? It’s hard to imagine how something as small as a spark can grow into a blaze that stretches for miles. But here’s the thing—leadership works in much the same way.
A leader doesn’t start as a bonfire. They begin as a single spark—a quiet idea, a small act of kindness, a moment of courage. Just like those sparks that ignite a forest, leadership grows when it catches onto something bigger than itself. When that spark spreads to others, it becomes a force that can light up an entire community.
Now, think about the firefighters battling those wildfires. They’re not working alone. They’re part of a team—each person knowing their role, trusting one another, and acting with purpose. That’s leadership in action. Sometimes, they have to charge into the flames, and other times, they step back and support from the sidelines. Leadership isn’t always about being the one in front; it’s knowing when to step up and when to let others shine.
In our own lives, we face challenges too. Maybe it’s a tough hike, a patrol project, or even standing up for what’s right. You might feel like your actions are small, but every choice you make can spark something greater. Help someone who’s struggling, share an idea when others are quiet, or take the lead on a small task. That’s how leadership starts.
But here’s the most important part—leaders also protect. Just like firefighters build firebreaks to stop the flames, a good leader watches for the moments when they need to protect their team. Sometimes it means standing up against negativity, sometimes it means listening when someone’s struggling, and sometimes it’s knowing when to ask for help. Leadership is about strength, but also about care.
So, Scouts, ask yourself: What spark are you going to start? Will it be one that brings light, warmth, and strength to others?
Be the spark that leads, not the flame that burns and keep those battling real wildfires in your heart.
