One thing that many of the Webelos Scouts might be used to is letting their mom and dad
buy all of their toys, hobbies, diversions, etc. Sit down with them and find out one thing that
each boy wants, that costs more money than he currently has. Once they have done this, help
them figure out a budget and think of a plan for how to get that item, on their own. If they don’t
get an allowance, go over some options that they can try so that they can earn some money, such
as doing a paper route, having a lemonade stand, doing chores around the house, doing yard
work and other such activities. Once they have come up with some ideas, have them talk to their
parents about how they could reach their goal. Check up with the Scouts, periodically, to see
how their goal is coming along. The Scout will have a greater appreciation for whatever they
saved up for since they had to work hard to get it. Teach them the importance of saving up for
things and how much better they feel once they are able to get them on their own.
