CLAY BEADS

Materials:

Play Dough or clay

Colors to create different shades (food coloring or acrylic paints)

toothpicks

String

While discussing the handicapped, have Scouts make clay beads using only one hand. Give the scouts a handful of clay and have them divide it into several piles to create a variety of colors. Give boys some coloring materials to knead into clay using only one hand. After having achieved desired colors, have the boys break off some clay into small pieces to create beads. The beads can be oval, round, square, or any shape they choose. After creating shapes, have boys stick a toothpick through each clay bead to create a hole for the string. Let the beads dry. After beads have dried, have boys string beads with one hand. Then have boys try to TIE string with only one hand.

PAPER AIRPLANES

Materials: Paper One hand.

Give each boy one piece of paper and have them decorate their airplane in any manner they wish. Then have boys try to fold paper airplanes using only one hand. Upon completion of folding airplanes, have boys compete in a paper airplane contest.

SHOE BOOKMARK

Materials: Felt of any color

Felt marker Scissors

Glue

Curl Hair Clips (with spring)

String (optional)

Draw the pattern of a shoe sole, tongue, and sides of a shoe out of felt. Cut four soles of shoes to cover both sides of the clips. Glue clip to one of the soles. Then glue the second sole onto the first to cover the backside of the clip. Repeat the procedure to cover the front part of the clip. Glue tongue onto the front part of the sole. Take the sides and glue them to the front and back of the shoes. May use string to represent shoelaces.

THE END OF THE RAINBOW

• chenille stems – white or colors to match beads • scissors • faceted beads – 8 red, 7 orange, 6 yellow, 5 green, 4 blue, 3 purple • cookie sheet lined with waxed paper or foil • black or green craft foam • gold jumbo rickrack • craft glue •

Put red beads on the chenille stem (they should be touching). Trim off excess, leaving about ¼” on one end and about 1” tail on the other. Repeat with each color of beads. Arrange bead rows on a cookie sheet, curving slightly and making the rows touch as much as possible with the 1” tails on the same side to form a rainbow section. Place cookie sheet into a cold oven. Turn oven on to 350 degrees. When the oven has reached temperature, bake for 10-15 minutes to fuse beads together, then turn the oven off. Let the oven cool completely before removing the tray (this could take a couple of hours). Cut two pot shapes out of foam. Glue rickrack along the top edge of each pot so ½ of it shows above edge. Carefully remove the rainbow section from the tray. Trim off short chenille stem ends. Glue 1” tails “sandwiched” between pots.

GROCERY BAG KITE

• 2 plastic grocery bags • stapler • kite string • Cut a few strips (about 1” wide) from one bag.

Staple three or four 2’ strips along the bottom seam of other bags for tails. Tie handles together with the end of the kite string. To fly, start running to fill the bag with air, then slowly let out the string and watch it soar!

LEPRECHAUN MOBILE

2 paper plates • construction paper • scissors • thread • craft glue •

Cut centers from paper plates. Fold construction paper in half and cut out facial features (you need to have 2 identical pieces of each). Position one set of parts inside of one plate ring. Lay thread pieces to join the parts and hang from the top of the ring. Glue the second set of parts over first, with the thread in between. Glue ears on each side of the plate rim. Glue the second plate rim over first, making sure the top of each thread is secured. Cut ¼” strips of orange paper and wrap around a pencil to curl. Glue around the rim for hair and beard. Glue green hat on each side of the head with the end of the thread loop between layers. MINI KITE MOBILE • blue poster board • 3” squares of colored paper • ruler • pencil • tape • curling ribbon • needle • thread • Lightly draw a centerline on the backside of the square from corner to corner. Fold other corners into the center, with edge laying along the line, to make a kite shape. Tuck the end of a 4” piece of ribbon inside the bottom corner of the kite and secure with tape. Tape where corners meet to make it flat. Tie three 1.5” pieces of ribbon onto the tail. Make eight kites. Cut spiral from poster board (8” diam.). Thread needle. Insert the needle down through the spiral, through the top of the kite, and back up through the spiral near the first hole and knot thread to attach kites at eight points along the spiral.

Tips and Ideas

Cut out of craft foam and glue a ring cut from the handle of a milk carton on the back to make a neckerchief slide. (Add some gold rickrack or some “gold” coins punched out of yellow foam to the top of the pot)
