Since the state of Kansas celebrates its' birthday in January, you may want to have your den do the following opening at the pack meeting:
PERSONNEL: 7 Cub Scouts
Cub #1: "I was born on January 29th, 1861 and the entry, into the union is by birth-certificate. I am many things to many people. Did you know that I am close to 3 million living souls and a ghost of thousands who have lived and died for me?"
Cub #2: "How well I remember the Kanza Indian tribe and the running of the Cherokee strip. I'll never forget Atchison, Topeka and 500 miles of the Santa Fe Trail; towns like Kansas City, Fort Scott, Dodge City, Hays. Medicine Lodge and Wichita. Oh yes, and Wild Bill Hickok, Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, and Buffalo Bill."
Cub #3: "As you look at me, you can see flour mills and elevators, hills and plains, an ocean of waving grain. I'm not so small, you know. I'm 400 miles long and 200 miles wide and in that farming belt you'll find over 80,400 farms and 3,500 manufacturing plants.
Cub #4: A lot of beef and dairy cattle, and gas and oil. If you had the snout of a gopher, you could trace over 37,000 miles of pipe line, and 8,000 miles of railroads. I wonder if you know that I am 7096 of the private aircraft built in the world, and 40 state lakes and 1,000 state and local parks."
Cub #5: "I am the sunflower, the meadowlark, and the cotton wood. I am quiet, dusty, country town
and noisy growing cities. Did you ever stop to think that I am over 800 schools, colleges and universities, 3,000 churches where my people pray to God?"
Cub #6: "I'm William Allen White, Alfred M. Landon, Robert Dole, and Mike Hayden, "Home on the Range", Emmett Kelly and Miss America, Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States. Speaking of things big, how about over 400 million bushels of wheat? That's enough to fill a few bread baskets!"
Cub #7: "Yes, these are some of the things and people that I am. I just pray to God that the beat of my heart will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration to the United States and to the World."
ALL: "I AM THE STATE OF KANSAS!"
