  MAGIC FUNNEL

Materials: Table tennis balls,
circle of thin cardboard, or cardstock,
(4 inches across)
Flexible drinking straw
Glue
Tape
Scissors
Take the cardboard circle and cut a slit from the edge to the middle. Curl the circle into a cone.
Tape the edges together inside and out.
Strip the tip off of the cone. Cut a piece of drinking straw 1 ½ inches long and push it through the
hole so it just goes down inside. Glue it in place.
Put the table tennis ball into the funnel. Blow hard., pointing the funnel up. Keep blowing and
point the funnel down. What happens to the ball?
What Happens? The air that you blow is moving faster than the air on the other side of the table
tennis ball. Fast moving air has less pressure than slow moving air so there is more push at the
wide end of the funnel. So the ball stays in the funnel.

 

 

 

WATCHING SOUND MOVE

Materials: Plastic bottle (2-liter pop bottle)
plastic bag,
rubber band,
scissors
small candle
Cut the base off the plastic bottle. Then cut a piece from the plastic
bag to cover to the end of the bottle.
Stretch the piece of plastic tightly over the end of the bottle. Secure it with the rubber band.
Light the candle. Then hold the bottle with its neck about 1 inch away from the candle
Now tap the piece of plastic with your fingertips. What happens to the flame?
When you tap the piece of plastic you make tiny particles in the air beside it to vibrate. These
vibrating particles make the particles beside them vibrate too. The vibrations travel through the
bottle and disturb the flame.
