This Takes the Cake

The highlight of many courts of honor is the reception. That’s not (necessarily) a criticism of the ceremony. It’s just an acknowledgement that many people enjoy socializing and reuniting with old friends while they munch on sinfully delicious desserts.

Those desserts typically include a simple sheet cake, but simple is definitely optional these days. Thanks in part to TV shows like “Cake Boss,” more and more families are creating fun and elaborate cakes that will leave guests talking long after the court of honor has ended. Some people would call such creations unnecessary and over the top. Still, if you have the means, a fancy cake is a great way to emphasize the importance of your honoree’s accomplishment—and perhaps to motivate the younger Scouts at the court of honor to reach the same lofty heights. If a little flour, sugar, and imagination can convince a wavering Scout to become an Eagle Scout, well, that would take the cake!
