Opening Thoughts

Another week, another newsletter. Daddy and I are doing well, we are even almost back to our pre-thanksgiving weight. That is a bit holiday magic, if you ask me and my flip flopping tail. Daddy has been busy working like always, but also working on his anxiety and figuring out how to get his ADHD routines and structure back in place.

We have been exploring happiness and how it really aligns with contentment, peace, balance, feeling grounded, rather than a bright constant joyous feeling. Why, well its easier for companies to sell us stuff around a long lasting positive, radiant energy that they claim stuff will bring us.

This weeks blog post is based around "Brrr, Fun in the Outdoors", loaded with resources, games, crafts, ceremonies, etc. based around having fun in the cold outdoors. I like it cold, but not sure that's my idea of fun, at least not without a warm blanket to turn in my warm cozy den.

Fun Winter Games & Challenges

Winter Riddle Time: What do you call a snowman with a six-pack? An abdominal snowman!

Brain Teaser: I’m light as a feather, yet the strongest man can’t hold me for more than five minutes. What am I? (Answer: Your breath!)

Quick Challenge: How fast can you make a snowball without using your hands? Use your nose, chin, or anything else to scoop up the snow and form a ball! Ready... set... go!

Tongue Twister Challenge: How many snowflakes could a snowflake flake, if a snowflake could flake snowflakes?

Creative Scout Recruitment & Fundraising Ideas

1. Winter Carnival Booth: Set up a booth at a local winter carnival offering fun activities like a snowball toss, survival bracelet-making, or a mini scavenger hunt. Collect donations or charge a small fee for participation to fund your unit.

2. Bird Feeder Fundraiser: Have scouts create bird feeders from recycled materials or peanut butter and seeds, then sell them at a local market or event. Not only are they eco-friendly, but they show the Scouts’ dedication to wildlife protection!

3. Winter Gear Donations: Host a “Winter Gear Drive” where scouts can collect donations of used coats, gloves, or blankets to be given to a local charity. In return, donors can get a Scout badge or sticker for their generosity.

4. “Snowman Building” Contest: Invite families to participate in a snowman building contest with a small entry fee. You can even have a hot cocoa bar for extra fun, and the best snowman wins a prize. The proceeds go to your unit’s activities.

Winter Crafts for Scouts

1. Paracord Winter Survival Bracelets: Teach scouts how to create their own survival bracelets with paracord. This fun activity will give them something practical to wear while also learning basic survival skills.

2. Pinecone Owls: Scouts can gather pinecones and use materials like googly eyes, feathers, and glue to create cute little owls. It’s a great nature-based craft that’s simple and fun.

3. Snowflake Animal Decorations: Combine the beauty of winter snowflakes with animal shapes. Use white paper and a template to cut out snowflakes, then decorate with animal faces or shapes to create a winter wonderland.

4. DIY Snowflake Ornaments: A perfect craft to make at meetings! Scouts can use sticks, cotton balls, beads, or even paper to create their very own snowflake ornaments to hang on their tree or to give as gifts.

SM Minute - Fun and Safe Winter Camping

Winter camping is one of those activities that can be both exciting and rewarding. There’s something about the crisp air, the quiet of a snow-covered landscape, and the thrill of being outdoors in the cold that just can't be matched. As Scouts, we learn not only how to enjoy these outdoor adventures, but also how to do them safely. It’s important to remember that the joys of winter camping are only possible when we pay attention to ourselves and our fellow Scouts.

First off, winter camping requires us to be aware of the weather and how it affects us. The cold can be dangerous if we're not properly prepared. Remember the three main layers of clothing: moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and waterproof outer layers. Don’t forget to keep your extremities warm, as cold fingers, toes, and noses can lead to serious issues like frostbite. And just as important as keeping yourself warm is checking on your fellow Scouts. If one of us starts to show signs of cold stress or exhaustion, it’s crucial we notice early and take action. It’s about looking out for one another and keeping the fun going while staying safe!

Winter camping isn’t just about surviving the cold, it’s about enjoying it! Whether you’re building snow shelters, roasting marshmallows around a campfire, or learning how to start a fire in the snow, there’s plenty of opportunity for fun. A great way to have fun while being safe is by staying active. Snowball fights, tracking animals, or a winter scavenger hunt can keep you moving and warm. But always remember, when the fun gets too energetic, take breaks, hydrate, and check in with yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but we must balance fun with safety!

Winter camping teaches us valuable skills that go beyond setting up tents and starting fires. It teaches us resilience, teamwork, and the importance of being prepared. It shows us how we can find joy in challenges when we approach them with the right mindset. So as you prepare for your winter camping adventures, remember to have fun, stay safe, and always look out for each other.

Let’s keep the winter camping spirit alive, stay safe, and enjoy the beauty of the season!
