I was born on February 20, 1890, in Parowan, Utah. I lived on a farm and I loved everything about “high plains country living” except going to school. In fact, I dropped out of school in the 8th grade. Then, when I was 18, I met Professor Thomas Trueblood, a Native American. I told him about my hopes and dreams. He told me that I could do anything I wanted to, but only if I first got an education. He changed my life. I decided to go back to school. It was at school that I realized that I wanted to participate in track and field sports. My name is Alma Richards. I was the first person from Utah to win an Olympic Gold Medal in any sport. I was born on August 19, 1906, in Indian Springs, Utah. My life was like most kids of the pioneer west. Life was strenuous and we worked hard to survive. I was a good older brother and my father valued my hard work, but I was only an average student. As a young boy, I began to notice the amazing machines of those days. Machines like the telephone and light bulbs. I was full of enthusiasm and questions. My father took the time to explain to me these creations and told me of the people who “dedicated their lives to such innovations”. I decided then that I wanted to be an inventor. I was born in Richfield, Utah on October 12, 1932. “My father was a pilot in World War I, so I grew up with flying and always wanted to be a pilot. As a matter of fact, my father didn't care if I was a bum or not, as long as I was a pilot. So I was a kid who built every model airplane and followed Buck Rogers through all his adventures.” When I grew up “I was a private pilot, then a Navy pilot”, and then a pilot with the Air Guard. My name is Edwin Jacob “Jake” Garn. I flew on the landmark flight for the Space Shuttle Discovery and became the first member of congress to go into space.
