OPENING, CLOSING, AND FLAG CEREMONIES/05-09

COWBOY ADVICE

~Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot
easier 'n puttin' it back.
~Good judgment comes from experience, and a
lot of that comes from bad judgment.
~The quickest way to double your money is to
fold it over and put it back in your pocket.
~If you find yourself in a hole the first thing to
do is stop diggin'.
~Always drink upstream from the herd.

OPENING ACTIVITY

As people arrive give them a name such as
cowpokes, broncobusters, buckaroos. Then
just before the meeting starts have the groups
gather and prepare to perform a cowboy
song, or skit. Have them practice
for a couple of minutes and then
three times during the meeting have
them come forward and do their act.

  FLAG CEREMONY
PIONEERS

This is a land that was settled by heroes,
the venturesome, brave pioneers.
Who bravely led out in the wilderness to dwell,
despite the danger and fears.
They braved the savage Indian,
the solitude and isolation,
They forged new trails, which became our roads,
New towns were their creation.
In covered wagons or pulling handcarts
they went where they wanted to be,
Some left poverty and servitude,
others fled from mobs or tyranny.
They left behind the cities and farms,
and went out to find their own place,
To have their own house and fields and church,
to be in their own free space.
These people who were so brave from the past,
gave us what we have today
Our ancestors, striving for more,
there is no way we can repay.
Let’s be sure we don’t do anything to dishonor
these people from the past and be grateful for them
as we pledge.

  CUB MASTER MINUTE
COWBOY BOOTS

Have you ever wondered why
cowboy boots have such fancy stitching?
Simple, it made the boots last longer. Long
ago towns didn’t have cement sidewalks and
after rain, the streets were muddy and dirty.
Cowboys walked in other mucky places, too.
The boots with their high sides and high
heels kept their feet clean and dry. Another
reason for the high heel was to keep their
foot in the stirrup. Just like the boots helped
keep the cowboy on their horse, cubs have
leaders, parents, teachers, and Church leaders
to help them stay on course.
