Snow Camping Tips

Just because winter is almost in full swing doesn’t mean you can’t go camping outdoors anymore. Whether you’re in search of great cross-country skiing, or a perfect winter sunrise from the top of a snowy peak, snow camping is often the perfect way to get you there. Though camping in the snow can be a little frightening, with a little preparation and a few pro tips, a winter’s night, or two outside may become your new favorite adventure. Winter camping has some bonuses available that you can’t find in the summertime… Like, there are no bugs to worry about… or perhaps scarcity of water is a concern where you are camping, just camp in a place with clean snow. Here are 9 different websites with a whole bunch of fantastic winter camping tips!

 

Sectionhiker.com has some good winter outdoors advice: Winter camping and backpacking have a much steeper learning curve than three season hiking and camping because you have to carry a lot more gear and learn so many new skills. Here are some tips and tricks…

 

 

Rei.com suggests that you need to set yourself up for a successful winter campout, you’ll want to build on your knowledge of fair-weather camping while adjusting for the additional challenges of cold temperatures, snowy landscapes, and unpredictable weather.  

 

 

The Sierra Club mentioned… It’s easier than you may think to stay comfortable while winter camping. “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” wrote John Steinbeck…

 

 

Tripsavvy.com advises that… You might be thinking, "Why would anyone want to camp in the winter?" The summer camping crowds have hibernated to their homes, making campgrounds more peaceful and the cold season is actually quite stunning. Trees have shed their leaves and rivers and lakes are frozen. Winter offers a different landscape and even when it snows, winter is a beautiful season that can be enjoyed outdoors.

 

 

MyMichiganTrips gives some good ideas for winter camping…I had read about winter camping and always wanted to try it, but up until then, I didn’t have anyone to go with. Most people think we are crazy and will not even consider trying it. However, if you are well prepared and have the right gear it can be a really good time.

A Candian outdoor store/magazine says that… Many people think winter camping is something impossible or extreme. But in reality, as long as you have the right gear and plan ahead, it can be a fun way to get your friends together outside in the off-season. The biggest thing about winter camping is to be prepared. If you’re a beginner winter camper, choose a location that’s easy to get to and plan a single night trip, so you can fine-tune your systems and have an easy out in case of anything unexpected.
