Loyal fishing thoughts

One of the fondest memories I have of my childhood is getting to go fishing with my grandfather. Grandpa had a pickup truck and a boat and he would come very early on a Saturday morning to pick up my brother and I and take us fishing. When we left the house it was still dark but when we arrived at the lake the sun had risen. We would help grandpa launch the boat off the back of the trailer into the water. Grandpa would launch the boat not too far away from a boat dock, and he had a rope on the boat so that it wouldn’t get too far away. That way we could step off of the boat dock and get into the boat without getting our feet wet. I remember grandpa always brought along cookies just in case we were not very successful in our fishing. Most of the time I remember catching bluegill out of the lakes that we went fishing at. Grandpa taught us how to bait our hook, and to set the bobbers properly. And he showed us how to cast our fish lines so that we wouldn’t get them all tangled up with each other.

Scouting Fish Stories

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts have awards and merit badges for fishing activities. Fishing and Scouting goes all the way back to Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden-Powell, who said that “every Scout ought to be able to fish in order to get food for himself. A tenderfoot (beginner) who starved on the bank of a river full of fish would look very silly, yet it might happen to one who had never learned to catch fish.” True to Baden-Powell’s words, the Scout Fishing merit badge seeks to teach those very skills. Scouts are taught fishing rules and regulations, fishing safety, how to use the fishing equipment and how to cook their fish.

How Big Was Your Fish?

Fishing is a skill that can become a lifelong hobby, or possibly a career. It can be done alone, or with family or friends. What types of fish do you like to eat? Have you ever gone fishing and caught a fish to bring home to eat? Can you tell different types of fish from each other? What are the differences between Blue Gill and Sunfish, and where and when is the best time to catch them? If you participate in Scouting and decide to pursue these fishing awards and merit badge share your story with us and tell us how big your fish was!
