General Ideas
Boys may not admit it, but they all like to ham it up. Give them something to
make noise with, and they will be making music. Costumes, props and music will
get them into the acting spirit. There are three different skill areas for Showman:
Puppetry, Music and Drama. The boys can select the area in which they are interested.
SHOWMAN - DEN ACTIVITIES
Invite a high school drama teacher in to explain and demonstrate make-up techniques.
Ask a clown to give a talk on clowning and give a demonstration.
Write a puppet play and make the puppets act it out. Make a puppet stage from
cardboard.
Put on an advancement ceremony for your Pack meeting (using a script and costumes).
Write and preform a one-act play for a Pack meeting.
Use a tape recorder to tape the boy's voices and let them hear how they sound.
Talk about sound effects. Let the boys try some of them out.
Write and film a short movie and show it to parents at a Pack meeting.
Contact local musicians' groups and have a soloist visit and Den meeting and discuss
the "life of a musician".
Visit a costume shop.
Have a Den talent show. Each boy selects the area they are interested in (music,
drama, or puppetry); and does a presentation. Invite parents and the Cubmaster.
Combine them in a group. Let the boys create their own short stories. Act them
out using the puppets that they have made. If you have someone doing the music
portion of showman, perhaps they can fulfill some of their requirements and play
tunes during the show. The music can be successfully used as the transition between
the different stories.
Take your entertainment a Pack Meeting, to a children's home or hospital as a
good turn.
