Air Pressure



Tie a string or fishing line around a door knob at one end of the room. Take the string and slide a straw over the other end. Tie this end off on another piece of furniture. Blow up a balloon and pinch the end to hold in the air. Tape the top .of the balloon to the straw so that the balloon hangs down. Still holding the balloon closed, walk the straw and balloon to one end of the line. Face the other end, and let the balloon go. The escaping air will act like a jet propulsion to push the balloon forward on the string. Have a balloon rocket race with your friends. String up multiple lines.>


Create this Submarine Diver by using a 1 liter soda bottle with lid and a 2 milliliter eyedropper. Fill the plastic bottle with water to overflowing. Partially fill the eyedropper with water. Drop the eyedropper into the bottle of water. If the eyedropper sinks, remove it and squeeze some of the water out. Close the lid, squeeze the sides of the bottle with your hands, and observe the level of the water inside the eyedropper. What happened? Squeezing the bottle increases the pressure inside, causing water to move into the open eyedropper. The extra water increases the weight of the eyedropper. Submarines move up and down in the water due to weight changes.
