Show your Webelos how to hoist, lower, hang and fold the American flag. How to do the same with your state flag, and pack flag. Teach them by letting them do a ceremony raising and lowering all three flags together. On camp outs, take the opportunity to let each boy have a turn hoisting and lowering the flags and how to fold them properly. The boys can practice, practice and then perform the ceremony. Every Den Meeting and camp out should have a flag ceremony. This is a good way for the boys to constantly work on their skills, preparing them for Boy Scouts.

Flag History

There have been many, many flags that have flown over the United States of America. Using resources in the library, the __________, Betsy Ross Web page and other resources, get drawings or representations of as many of these flags as you can.

Draw the American Flag

Can you draw an accurate picture of the flag? Without a flag on display, have the boys draw the flag from memory. Then, bring out the flag. Explain that the states are represented by the stars, and the red and white stripes represent the 13 colonies. Are there 7 red or 7 white stripes? Check it out! More details at American Flag Tribute link below.

Flag Service Project

For a fun Flag service project, work with a neighborhood Dry Cleaners. See if they will dry clean flags from your neighborhood about 2-3 weeks before July 4th. Distribute flyers for neighbors to arrange their own drop off and pickup from the cleaners. Offer to have a retirement ceremony for any flags that have served their duty and combine this with 4th of July festivities. You may want to have a fund-raiser to sell flags to those who don't have one, or whose flag is no longer the lunar surface.
