Citizenship Through Service - Practice a Good Turn

One way to make this activity badge come alive is to get your Webelos scouts involved. A good citizen gets involved where he lives. Your involvement can start at any age and it can be almost any useful act.

Here are some ideas: Clean up a park, bike path with the whole patrol. Or clean up the grounds of your sponsor's building, or a roadside. Distribute posters and handbills for the United Way. Have a used clothing drive or canned food for the local food bank. Set up a fire prevention display. Collect waste material for recycling Provide a party or recreational equipment for a children's home.

There are hundreds of ways that your Webelos den can become involved in a community, service project. The boys will have some good ideas of their own. Be sure that the project is well planned and thought out before you begin. Then share with the boys that warm feeling of citizenship through service.

Here are some aims that may help you:

Show that our society depends on coordinating the concerns of its citizens - and that each citizen has the duty to be concerned for others.

Instill pride in the community, how it looks and in what it does. Show the, value of community spirit.

Show the vital importance of natural resources to themselves, our country, and our way of life. Show the interdependence of man and his environment.

To give a feeling of responsibility for community safety, teach the responsibilities of those who handle (police, fire, rescue) community emergencies and how a citizen's cooperation can help them do their jobs.

To give historical identity, through the past of your community. teach the richness of our local and state heritage and create the desire to carry it forward.
